Default New Emissions Check

Well I figured that Id go down and try to smog my car with the Cobb AP married but realtime map being stock mode. All the necessary sensors are there, both o2's, egt... Passed the visual but the car for some reason did not pass, it got rejected. Smog tech told me that this is a new system this year. The reason for the reject were o2 sensor not ready, and catalyst monitor not ready.

He said that these monitors don't set for a couple of miles, But i'm assuming that they may not ever set with the ap married stage 2 base map, stock married realtime map. Of course I switched the maps and drove just a few miles to the smog inspection station and this may be the cause for the monitors not setting yet. Has anyone just tried passing smog with stage 2 base and realtime map (Assuming you pass the visual inspection)? I'm curious how cobb eliminates the cel codes, is it just extending the parameters, or ignoring the afflicting sensors completely?

I put the stock dp on and flasshed base back to stock and then passed, but just curious if stage 2 (cattles) would pass as is with cobb map (of course without a visual inspection)?

I'd try it again with at least 10-15 miles since your last ECU change.

From what I've heard, there's a new system up and running as of a month ago or so. The smog machine now, via the OBD port, FORCES monitor item checks in your ECU. As far as I understand, a car with a catless reflash, and the subsequent CEL codes "turned off" with an AP or otherwise, will immediately fail the smog test, when it attempts to run those monitors.

^That sucks. I've passed every time with a protuned (AP) stage II MY03 WRX. When my next smog comes up, we'll see.

Normally "not ready" warnings usually occur due to the ECU having been reset within the past couple days/couple hundred miles, but after reading Cory's post (above), it sounds like that may not have solved your problem.

Yeah, I got my car smogged last month and didn't have a problem with stage 2 and being catless.

If this just changed, then that might accelerate my plans to go back to stock.

This could be trouble for me with numerous codes turned off in my ECU with Enginuity... errr, I mean RomRaider. Is this maybe why Perrin and Harmon Motive are putting cats on their '08 WRX/STI downpipes? Perrin seems pretty ademate that their exhausts will have cats.

Anybody know how the ECU determines cat efficiency? I have my wideband in place of the stock rear O2. I'm using one of the analog outputs to simulate the stock sensor.
When you remove a cat what changes are seen via the rear O2 that signals the cat is bad or missing? Is it just a wider swing on the output?

Front O2 sensor switches rich-lean about 30 times for every one switch of the rear, as long as the cat's working properly. If you just remove the cat and were to leave the EM stock and O2 sensors in place, then the front and rear sensors will effectively see the SAME switching ratio, which tells the ECU that everything's gone wrong!

pffft, you guys are lucky. "OBDII monitors not run yet" fails, try a true emissions test coupled with a strict visual underhood inspection, and test of smog equipment to be in place and properly functioning. Oh how I love California.

How do you think some of the people on this forum ended up in Reno?

It will still be the same. I had read about this on EvoM, but didn't understand what was going on, but now I do. I've got a ECU reflash that elimiates the rear O2 sensor, so I'm gonna have to get a universal O2 sensor this year and remove that part of the code.

So you're saying that any map that defeats the rear O2 sensor CEL is going to prevent passing now?

If they check for the monitors to be enabled, yes. Any disabled or altered monitors will show up. If they check.

Well, the good news for me (if they check) then is that my car will run fine on the stock map. I just have to hook the stock boost solenoid back up and install a physical fix for the rear O2 sensor CEL (I already have the UP EGT CEL Resistor Fix in there), then drive around for a week before the check.

Just got smogged...didn't have to put anything back to stock. Gaye said the only difference is that the certificate that prints out looks different. So as long as you don't have a CEL and your ECU hasn't been reset recently, I think you're still good to go.
