no regrets! take it as you get it!
Default new question

1st- My starter is going out, and i need to know if i can use one from a 1.8L. My room mate has one from his swap. Is it possible to use?

2nd- I want to turbo charge my 2.5rs without swapping motors. I know the AVO kit is available for my ride but the funds arnt. What is the cheapest and safest way to go about it?

thanks!

1) If it bolts up, it should work. They all run off 12 volt batteries.

2) Cheap and safe are on opposite ends of the turbocharging spectrum. If you don't have another car or the funds to immediately fix a blown motor, don't do it. If you do it anyway, use a kit that comes with some kind of fuel management beyond a pressure regulator, and better yet something like a Link that will control spark as well. But really, if you want a turbo, spend the money for a proper swap or just buy a WRX.

I know none of that is what you want to hear, but it's the only advice I would give.

Cheap and Safe for an aftermarket turbo setup are pretty much mutually exclusive. IMO, the cheapest "safe" way to do it, is to get a complete WRX motor, and swap it in there.

yah i kinda figured as much. i will just continue to pay off some stuff and then trade it in on a WRX or an STi later. so it doesnt matter what size motor the starter came off of? just as long as it bolts up?

How many miles are on your motor? The safest way is probably just to swap a turbo motor in your car as the NA RS motor has a high compression ratio and doesn't like to handle boost all that well. You can turbo it, you just can't go crazy. And by crazy I mean anything over like 6 or 7 lbs of boost.

ok so i have another question. my check engine light is on and the code is for my knock sensor. could that be from my starter having a terrible time turning over or not? or could my starting problem come from a faulty knock sensor? bare with me. im still learning my suby.thanks.

The knock sensor is the only code in there? Most cars I've seen won't turn on the MIL for a knock sensor... but now that I think of it, I don't know that I've EVER seen a KS code in a subi... ?

Either way, if the starter won't even turn over, the knock sensor is NOT the problem!

My last RS had a knock sensor code when I bought it. Never came back after the ECU was reset during the clutch install.

AFAIK, the RS ECU doesn't do the blinky light/limp-home mode for excessive knocking... and it's awfully hard to get a more or less stock EJ25 to knock anyway. But, the CEL is not related to the starter problem, unless there's some weird circuit in there that makes no sense to those of us who don't engineer Subarus for a living.

the car does start. sounds horrible. but i have been told that if my starter is going out, a KS code will pop up sometimes. Bavarian told me that. they said that when a starter is about to go out, it vibrates when turning causing the KS code to pop up. does that sound right? it confuses the crap out of me. ive never herd of that happening before.the motor sounds and feels fine, a little bit of valve chatter is about it.

Sounds plausible. I didn't think the knock sensor was active at such low RPM.

On *most* vehicles, the KS does not work while cranking, as REGULAR cranking could sound like knocking to a piezo crystal...
