Yeah, I passed one bad spinout today on 395N near Damonte Ranch. Didn't look too bad, thankfully.

Get your snow tires warmed up.

My Google weather gadget is showing rain with a very small probability of snow. Snow line is estimated at 6000, but rain + overnight lows of 36 means at the very least it'll be icy.

*sigh*

Do I need to put on my snow tires this week, then take them back off for the track day this weekend?

I debated putting on the snows yesterday when taking off the race tires, but decided that it's too early, even with snow coming to the mountains this week. Went with the balding summer tires instead (well, balding on the inside edge of the tread anyway).

Unfortunately I don't think I really have a choice but to put them on for a day or two. We might get a decent amount up here.

I miss the big Tahoe dumps..

I figure a bit of wasted extra wear on the snow tires is a lot better than having your car end up in a shop because you found an icy/snowy patch on summer tires... but meh that's just me ... we buy tires just to wear them out, might as well not be overly timid with something that is suppose to be replaced.

I'll be putting on my snow tires this week, and my other car has snow rated as well.

Some of us actually drive safely when it's snowy and icy as opposed to using it as an excuse to drift every corner.

On my way home from the meet, once I hit the North Valleys, tons of large snow flakes falling causing people to drive 10MPH on the freeway. Once I passed them, I found that 45MPH was perfectly safe. Visibility was really bad though.

Welp.... it was 62 degrees on Sunday, so I washed 3 cars. Sorry about all the snow.

One thing that sucks about a Subaru on snow tires... you still end up stuck behind all the cars going 15 mph. I went passed 6 people this morning by going just 30 mph when the road went to 2 lanes... everyone else stayed in the dry lane going 15.

I wish I had a lane to pass in. I was stuck going less than 15mph most of the way to work

I saw a car off the road, on the first hill leaving cold springs. a state trooper was at the top of the hill (kept people going a bit slower)

dropped jeana off and then had to stop while cops and tow drivers cleaned up a mess on double R between longley and south meadows. 2 cars crashed. one was spun out and half way over the median. one was off to the side (both north bound) and a semi had "spun out" in the right lane. (lost traction) he had triangles out and was chaining up to drive forward.

a cop (out of his car with hand signals) gave me the stop. so i waited. then he told me to move ahead .. (all of about 40 feet) where an other cop gave me the stop ... 10-15 minutes later we were on our way...

meh... i took the rally car in today just cause if someone slams into me I'd rather have a roll cage around me, than not.... hehehe

Were you wearing your harnesses and helmet? I'd hate to bounce my head off a roll cage rather than a nice piece of plastic trim.

harness yes, helmet no. using the 1 inch of belt stretch per 1 foot of harness belt. I could only possible hit 1 bar above my head (roll over) there is sfi padding there... which is intended for a helmet... If i removed that padding I should be in the clear...

course if something hits me hard enough to push the cage in, i could make contact. but at that point I'm pretty sure I'd rather be in a caged impreza, than a normal 99 Audi wagon.

1 or 2 rally guys gives me flack over that too. But 95% of rally drivers don't wear their helmets on transit .. probably 99% I only know 1 guy who wears his helmet during transit. (but 500 miles a year versus thousands for me)

good point.

Back on topic:
Today was a great day to have a Subaru with snows over the pass even with an insanely stiff suspension. Chain controls were Kingvale to 9 miles east of Truckee, but the summit West of Hwy 20 jct. was really bad and had 3 in the ditch and a spin in the fast lane. East of Donner was clear so idiots took off chains but Truckee East was bad pretty much to the state line and so now the idiots blocked both lanes going 20MPH in spots. Made kind of a rolling chicane slalom.

It is that time again. Thinking I should put the snows on today since allegedly we will have snow in the valley overnight. If my All Seasons weren't down to 1.5 seasons, I wouldn't fret it.

Who already has them on and who is holding out?
