They're only in the Legacies with the 2.5L motors. The 2.2L had 4.11's I think. Your best chance to be sure is to find one off a Legacy Outback, since they were all 2.5's in that generation IIRC.

I'm sure there are other cars that had 4.44's, namely Foresters and I'm pretty sure the 4EAT Imprezas... but again, they're all automatic 2.5L cars I think.

I can't seem to re-find the nice list of gear ratios for Subarus I used back when I was searching for SVX gearbox replacement parts.

I've found a few, but none that include autos...

Ah perfect. there's 18 legacies in there right now I'm sure a few will be 2.5 and Auto. i'm thinking I should find one i'm pretty sure is 4.44 and spin it to confirm. if it seems to take about 4 and 1/2 spins i should be good. if its very closer to 4 its not ...

$8 core charge... not sure if i should even bother bringing in my extra R160 for the $8 . i left it outside , taken apart so its very dirty inside... So that makes me tempted to .. but extra parts are always good right?

heh if i get really lucky maybe i'll find an VLSD, 4.44 I have one already , but I'd prefer not to have to swap that as well..

Swapping the LSD carrier will require some grinding of the open diff case you're putting it into, so be aware you'll need a bunch of diesel oil to flush the diff clean with or something. But that means you won't have pattern and shim the gears since you won't need to pull the pinion.

Also, the best way to check the ratio is just to count the teeth on the gears. I believe the 4.444's are 40/9.

hmm.. so should my lsd stay in its lsd carrier and i move the ring and pinion over instead?

there's 9 in there that could be the right ratio and lsd, but actually chances of that happening are probably 5% .

No swapping the ring/pinion is way more work than just swapping the carrier into the open 4.444 thus converting it to a LSD. That's how we did the 4.44 conversion on my SVX. The only hard part is that there are two nubs inside the open diff case that need to be ground down so the LSD carrier can be inserted into the case.

There are pretty explicit instructions on the svx forums on how to do it. Or you could just pay KSpeed to do it since I know Cory is familiar with the swap since he did my SVX like 3 times.

I'll have to read the write ups and see where to go from here. my crew chief often does all the trick stuff for me and i do the basic stuff.

oh and i just got back with a 4.44 , non lsd. Checked about 20 various subarus in the yard none with lsds. this was out of a 98 legacy outback 2.5L auto so i felt pretty sure it was correct and i did a simple spin test and watch the insides spin. takes just under 4 1/2 spins of the input for the outputs to spin once so i think i'm good.
