Default XBox Mod Chippin' y0!

Okay, so I'm thinking about going 1337 h4X0r on my XBox and getting a mod chip. I figure there's a few other people on here that might be interested in going down that road.

I haven't figured out much yet, but I'm doing research on www.xbox-scene.com trying to get myself out of the uber-n00b stage of understanding this thing. It looks like there's several versions of XBoxes out and severl choices for mod chips. In order to sucessfully mod an XBox, I think you need to buy the appropriate mod chip for your version XBox, a larger hard drive (but I don't know how large or what brands work, etc yet), and then you've got to download a new BIOS image. Only the BIOS image is illegal under the DMCA (although traditional "fair-use" laws mean a BIOS *should* be legal, Big-Brother's DMCA screws you), all the hardware is legal.

My roommate and my ex-roommate both modded their XBoxes, so I'm gonna lean on them for tips. If anyone wants to join me on this mission, let me know, and we can get our h4X0ring on! I'm pretty sure this is going to be one of those highly-detail-oriented deals where once I've done it and it works, I'm never going to want to do it again... like compiling and installing a custom Linux kernel. So if you're not in now, I probably won't want to help you in the future.

I hope Nick's XBox + a new power supply costs less than $150 'cause that's what I paid at Walmart for my XBox.... them things got cheap! So cheap I'd almost consider one for modding and one for XBox Live! so I don't accidentally nuke my Live! account by logging in w/ a modded box.

Thats more or less what I have, except I was 'forced' to buy a new xbox when one fried in a freak electrical short.

So, now I have two... one for Live (whenever I get around to signing that up) and one for doing whatever the hell I want (or possibly selling to my sister, scott or aaron...)

Aight... I'll keep up on the research and figure out which mod chip looks like the best. Once I have a game-plan, I'll find out how many we need and do a group buy sorta deal. Then we'll have to pick a free weekend and have a massive XBox mod party!

w00t!
