Any of em... I've read that most Honda & Toyota 4-cyl motors are interference designs, so snapped belt = bent valves. As for the Mazda, I don't know... it's about 10-15k past due for a new belt and it could blow sky high for all I care. I've given up on the thought of selling it, we'll probably donate the damn thing.

IIRC someone was worried about his Mazda MPV van that broke a timing belt, and asked if the motor was non-interference, and the expert consensus was that *all* Mazda motors are non-interference.

Honda and Toyota... I'm pretty sure a broken timing belt == ruined valves.

Oh, and no fair buying an '89 Si or anything... if you do, I'm stealing it and building an STX class killer. :P

And Kevin... SLO is *not* LA... hell it's more NorCal than SoCal as far as the people IMO, and insurance there is cheaper than Reno or Sac because there's far less people/drunk drivers/car theft. What's expensive in SLO is housing... mostly because of the college and the lack of places to live.... (i.e. high demand, low supply).

This is not supposed to be a racecar, ever, it's supposed to be a commuter for Laura. I just want it to have somewhere near semi-decent performance so I can stand to drive the thing occasionally and we don't get run over by semi-trucks when we're trying to get up to speed on a highway onramp.

MattR 2004-07-16 02:49 PM

My friend has a virtually new Jetta for sale. asking 13k...might be a little hi for what you're looking for though.

I know, I'm just bitching about how the STS classed Civic Si's come over to STX and kill us.

Libila 2004-07-17 12:29 AM

I drive an 88 civic DX everyday. I bought it off the original owner with 196,000 on it for 1K. I love this thing. Looks great for its age, great gas mileage, and no worries while driving it.

AtomicLabMonkey 2004-08-16 12:23 PM

We *finally* got another car to replace the Mazda. Picked up a black 5-speed '99 Corolla with less than 60k miles on it.

:liljon:

I actually really like the thing, it's nice and quiet (compared to all our other cars), handles pretty well, has decent git-up-and-go and gets good mileage.

ArthurS 2004-08-16 12:24 PM

Congrats! I bet maintance/reliabilty will be 10x better then the mazda.

Kevin M 2004-08-16 12:36 PM

Great choice!

Dean 2004-08-16 01:07 PM

Good choice. It will probably run until 150K and beyopnd easy with just routine maintenance. The interior will probably fail before the car does mechanically if maintained.

Nice work! Now here's your shopping list:
