Shifter bushings... Which ones?

Nasioc has a pretty good picture of the linkage:

http://www.wallpaperinstaller.com/sc...hifty_742a.jpg from this thread.

My question to those of you have swapped any, which ones, and what do you think of the results?

I picked up a set of urethane "D" bushings and before I put them in was trying to decide if I should do any of the others.

Kevin M 2007-04-18 09:31 AM

You definitely want to do E as well, and I have heard good things about A and C but never used them myself.

cody 2007-04-18 09:52 AM

I only did D because Kartboy had a package deal that included it. I'll probably do E someday if I find it cheap.

I had this kit installed a few weeks ago, and the difference is unbelievable. It looks like it has everything on your diagram except the short shifter

I believe those are all the bushings that came with my kit, plus I got the kartboy short shifter. It's the difference between rowing a boat and twisting your wrist on a jet-ski.

I think as a whole the difference will be great. As far as each individually I dont think you will really tell a difference. Speaking from doing my bushings+ss I installed the shifter and then drove it, then I installed "D" bushings in your diagram and I didnt really feel a difference. I have heard that bushings "E" and "C" make the most difference. I would have purchased bushing "E" but due to there being false advertising on gruppe-s I got a set of crossmember bushings instead.

doubleurx 2007-04-22 12:20 PM

Dean I also have the same kit installed. It was an amazing difference.

Dean 2007-04-22 01:39 PM

WOW!!! The difference is amazing. I had to loosen the pivot bushing bolt a bit to make the fore-aft movement easier, and don't ask what I did about the wrong front stay bushings ;)

I hope this fixes the 3rd vs. 5th down shift issue I occasionally have. At least I can't blame it on the sloppy shifter any more.

Well a shifter is certainly less expensive than a new shortblock when you accidentally spin it to 9k.

What did you do about the pivots, praytell? Urethane?

Not sure of the exact material, they are all TIC bushings previously linked except the front stays. Those are now Deanified(TM) Prothane 5MT urethane bushings. :)

I threw in the TIC rear Diff mount and transmission crossmember bushings while I was at it since I already had the group N tranny mount and Whiteline outrigger bushings.

Only a few more suspension bushings to do at some point.

Kevin M 2007-04-22 05:16 PM

I was thinking of the window pane urethane that comes in a tube. I wouldn't put it past you.

How could you tell that you had it on there too tight? I might have mine too tight as well.

Its all a matter of feel. If it feels to tight for you loosen it up a little. If its too loose, tighten it up.

Ignoring the other comments... The pivot bushing for the most part controls fore-aft shifter resistance. if that feels to stiff, loosen that bolt a 1/8-1/4 turn or until it feels better. This is the one that is up in the car on the shifter itself, so it is an easy 2 minute job.

I think what Scott is trying to say is that your shifter needs to do some kegel exercises.

cody 2007-04-23 10:55 PM

You're a kegel exercise.

sometimes when i shift from 1st to 2nd, i feel a slight buzz on the shifter during the middle of the shift. does this have to do with bushings? stock everything trannywise. just during 1-2 shift.

Probably just a vibration as the linkage goes through the forks. Are you pulling straight down or pulling left at the same time?

eggeegg 2007-05-15 07:12 AM

ya it happens when i pull left a little. normal then, eh.
