I tuned an 03 WRX a few monthis ago and always pull a Learning View shot before flashing a new map, so I know how the car has been running. This person installed the following the day before and has been driving around:
New catless up pipe Full turbo back catless exhaust CAI Here is his learning view. Keep in mind, the older 16bit Subaru's are suppose to have an IAM of 16... His car was not happy...

I have seen learning views like that on 100%-stock cars with no mechanical issues. Mostly STI's, but also a Forester XT the other day.

The biggest problem is how much his IAM dropped. On the 32 bit ecu's, they should be at 1.0 (FXT, STI, LGT 06+ WRX)
His should have been at 16...plus that was only a day of driving with those mods. It was really bad really fast. Also, he's running very lean above 50g/s AFR. When I verified his actual open loop AFR's, with my wideband, if was more lean and needed his maf adjusted a decent amount. Also the high RPM fine learned knock is not good. He also had a lot of feedback knock, which isn't shown.

Sorry for changing the topic, and hopefully this isnt a silly question but about how long/far could you go without a tune safely. What I'm getting at is that I bought some parts that were for sale cheap on nasioc a couple of months ago and am getting ready to put them on. I will be putting on a vf-39, sti "pinks" fuel injectors, and an sti tmic. I want to install them myself and if I drove it conservatively would it be alright to limp it the two or three miles from where I would do the work to the shop to get a tune?

*Side note - the latency is the same on the "Pinks" as the 420cc stock wrx injectors, but you'll still need to change the flow scaling and use a WBo2 reader to verify your AFR numbers in open loop fueling

This. You should absolutely positively NEVER drive a car with injectors or turbo not accounted for via EM, but in this case it's an easy fix.

You guys are assuming he has some way to get this "off the shelf map" onto the car which is not too likely considering he did not know the answer or talk about maps in any way.

This is what I was thinking... Without a cable/laptop you are out of luck. If you live a few miles from your tuner, they should be able to come to you and flash a "safe" base map to get you to the shop.

I want to point out that this technically isn't that bad. Stock tunes are setup to start at a IAM of 8 so I understnad its knocking but its not like its much worse then stock. Also Im not stating he doesn't need a tune either.
Just my .02
