Default Local Computer Stores

I need to drive somewhere close to downtown and pick up 2 or 3 workstations and LCD's today. I'm going to check out CompUSA but if there's nothing priced decently, any other local places I can fall back on? Oh Seņor Cheap Bastard?

Does it have to be today? I've been happier ordering PCs from Newegg than trying to shop around locally.

Yah, I need it today or tomorrow. If I had been told prior to yesterday that we are hiring 2 new people, I would have ordered them online already.

I figured as much, but it is the best local* computer store. Otherwise, CompUSA is decent. Big enough to have cheap prices, but not BestBuy big where the start gouging.

* locality is relative

Not bad, depending on what a "decent" desktop is.

I'll post links to them tomorrow.

I gotta say, looking at so many computers today, HP makes some really inexpensive, nice monitors and their computers are a great bang for the buck. The HP laptop I picked up for the owner of the company not too long ago was really nice for the $.

I have had an emachine desktop for 3 years and it hasn't had any problems yet. Of course, I probably think it's the bee's knees because the laptop I use every day is a 6 year old budget Compaq.

Man, I didn't realize they made computers that long ago.

Oh, yes. . . my first notebook was a Compaq Armada that I picked up in 2000. I also remember quite well the Compaq 150MHz Pentium desktop that a roomie had. It was almost completely impossible to upgrade due to all the proprietary hardware. . . funny shaped case, motherboard with daughterboard riser for PCI/ISA slots, on-board RAM. . .

It's not bad. 256MB of RAM, Athlon XP 1200 running XP Pro, PCMCIA slot, great speakers. It takes about 10 minutes to fully reboot, but once you get a browser window up, you can't even tell how old it is.

I'm going to reinstall the OS pretty soon here. It's been like 4 years.

Yeah, that'll probably fix most of your real speed issues. And if all your doing is browsing the web and checking e-mail, its gotta be more than sufficient.
