Matt,

Next time you make that run, stop off at the Virginia City Jerky Company. Try out their Triptip sandwhich. It is to die for, and well worth the trip to VC. Its only about $6, and you will be tasting it long after you are done eating it.

I think some of the skilled "ninja" bikers would leave you for dead up VC and on the truck route. I think the standing time for the descently crazy riders right now is 9 min from 7-11 to VC town limits (with a fairly traffic free run) Haven't timed it in a car but I don't think it's that fast.

In any controlled road-course environment, a well tuned car will be faster than a well tuned bike. The thrust to weight of a bike is amazing, but they just can't match the comparitivley massive grip advantage the car has due to twice the number of tires, that are usually 3 or 4 times as wide. Plus, a car can shift its weight nearly instantaneously, while a bike has to wait for the rider to tilt the bike over.

I don't know the times, but I bet the competative cars that run the hill climb are much faster than a bike could ever be up that stretch unless there's a couple of huge straights that I don't know about.

When it comes to the twisties... car > bike... even if the bike's more fun.

I really don't know one way or the other but I have yet to see any bike design that was doing anything to produce aero downforce, which is huge. It would be interesting to compare times of bikes vs. cars of some different series at the same track, like Daytona.

Top Gear did a Porsche (Carrera 4S IIRC) vs. a Bike (YZR?) on one of their episodes. The bike was *much* faster at accelerating on all of the straights, but even with the Porsche being really careful to keep its distance from the bike in the corners, it won easily by out-handling the bike.

I've timed myslef from the peak (1.5 miles west of VC) to the 7-11 in 9 minutes. Going down in the dark....I can get up the hill pretty quick too... A good rider would probably beat the car though, IMO. There are a few places where the straightaways would allow some insane speed on a bike.

I never said I could beat a bike though

yup photoshop always makes pics look liek 10000xxxx better than just a regular shot.. car looks suwweet yo.. when you're parked on gravel like that, try a shot where the camera lense is almost touching the ground pointing up at your car.. that'll make for a pretty crazy shot

That has got to be the most confusing sentence in the history of SECCS.

What's "it", and what's a "WRC tarma stage", and why are they similar? And why's "light" in quotes? Is that innuendo?

because he's driving an STi on a non-dirt road

it's a short timed session between two points.

it=what the thread is about

sorry, it's like a WRC tarmac stage lite

anyways, I don't like reading my own posts I guess.

I run with the bikes almost every weekend on the truck route. They can't keep up with the WRX in the corners but kill in the straights. I think they like me, they wave and seem to have developed some respect for the WRX and the Ghia.

When I was a kid they let bikes run the VC hill climb. Crazy fast runs but they had wrecks every day. The bikes were not allowed back after a few years. They were fun to watch!

I've commuted from Silver City to Reno for many many years and the ninja bikers I saw on the road were generaly poor drivers and pile up regularly. I'm always amazed at how few of them get hurt bad. The bikes get trashed but the drivers limp away. For a while in the 90's I would see one or two wrecks a week on the commute.

I'm sure the skilled bike racers aren't running at speed on the VC highway.

Do you guys think a bike would be competative in autocross? Sure would be fun to watch.

Theo

No way, quick side to side turns are very difficult, and the traction would limit their ability.

As has been said, bikes get eaten up in the corners. They have a great power to weight ratio, but as far as lateral Gs, I'd be surprisd if there was a street bike that could get anywhere near .9 even. Nothing you can do with suspension can change that unlike a car where a street car with minor upgrades should be able to pull 1+

The truck route ha some insanely fast straight sections between the posted 25MPH corners. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bike beat a car up it.
