I was browsing the Miata forums, and was quite amused by this explanation of why padding is necessary.

Go find a 1 meter length of 1.75-inch steel tubing. Have a friend swing it like a baseball bat and whack you in the back of the head with it. If you still don't know why you need padding, then maybe you actually don't need it.

But on most roadster roll bars, there is next to no way for a head, or helmet to come in contact with them, so padding is not very usefull.

I have no intention of proving or disproving this statement personally, but if I do... I know which side I want to err on.
