Default MY07 WRX Td04L-13T on a MY03 WRX AutoX legal?

I still have to call the dealer to be sure, but it looks like they have different part numbers even though they're both Td04L-13T's. Am I SOL if I want to stay in SP?

Yes, SOL according to Dean's exhaustive VF39/VF43 research. Turbo is considered part of the engine, which means you must update/backdate as a complete longblock.

Or I could have old info.

Different factory part numbers = different part and Turbos must be upgraded with the entire engine. Now if all the engine part numbers are identical, then you can use either turbo.

Oh, if it's a superceded part number, it's okay. Meaning, if you try to order part number 7 to get a replacement turbo and they tell you it's now part number 8, that's okay. So it may be legal.

It sure is refreshing to see that there are still competitors out there who research their mods BEFORE running an entire season illegally.

Well I guess I really am SOL. I called a dealer and according to him the MY03 has part #: 14411AA383 and costs $736.96. The MY07 has a part #: 14411AA630 and costs $1066.62.

I think Scott has an '02 TD04 he is willing to part with cheap that should match part number wise.

I think you're right (unless he's sold it). I just always keep my eye out for a great deal on things I'll eventually need...this seemed to fall in that category due to it's low milage at stock boost levels and low price.

So even though both turbos are Td04L-13T's, I'm SOL?

Yeah, but only because you told us. You'd be violating the rules as they are written pretty clearly, but nobody could possibly have been able to tell the difference had you swapped them.

Um, if they're the same exact turbo but Subaru has given them different part numbers so they can raise the price for people w/ '07's, then how will anyone prove your TD04-13T isn't a '02 turbo?

i.e. if the turbos are identical, they're both the '02 and the '07 part numbers.

It seems that is the case:

That would be considered swapping the wastegate actuator, which is modifying the turbo, which is illegal. Which sucks.

You're using your stock wastegate actuator with the new (identicle) turbo though. Isn't that actually "less illegal"?

Really?

What if I go and buy a replacement TD04-13T turbo housing, WG actuator, bearing sleeve, compressor and turbine blades, and assemble my own turbo with all the exact parts that come on the '03 car.

Is that turbo illegally modified?

What if I do the same thing with all used parts?

What if I do the same thing starting with a used TD04-13T that's got the wrong actuator on in?

IMO, if you have all the exact same parts on the car that were originally on the car, you're legal. The rules don't say anything about the process you take to get to that point.

The part numbers stamped on the part are the determining factor unless you can document the identicalness in some other way. The burden of proof is on the driver, not the protester.

And it doesn't matter how you arrive at having the right parts, just that you have them, used, new or otherwise.

I imagine Dean's right. I need to be able to "prove" that the part numbers stamped on the units both indicate the same part.

Cody would have to complain about lag at least 50% more to prevent us from noticing the reduction in lag he actually has, though.
