Well, the whole damn area of N. Nevada is pretty active... consider all the geothermal power we have out here... that's all possible because there's so much hot water underground near the surface around here. So, if there's all that hot water... there's probably a reason for it, no?

I've also heard that Rose/Slide is volcanic, though I though pretty much all the Sierra Nevada mountains were due to plate tectonics, not magma. Where's our resident geologist when we need him!?

You rang?....one resident geologist coming up. Both Mt. Rose and Slide mountain are made of volcanic rocks, but they are not volcanos. Peavine is another one like that. The nearest old volcano is northwest of Tahoe City. Nevada's crust is only about 15km thick, which is why there is so much geothermal activity. The Sierra Nevada range was formed by plate subduction (sinking) offshore which made dozens of volcanos (similar to the Cascades). They have all eroded and what you see is likely what is left of their bases, including solidified magma.
We just got word that the Mogul earthquakes have fault motion similar to the San Andreas (meaning strike-slip), side to side moving southeast to northwest. Might even be connected to the San Andreas in some weird way. Earthquakes are flaring up all over Nevada and Calif. right now. UNR seismo dept. also saying that a 6.0 is possible. Verdi area had 6.0's in both 1914 and 1948.

Oh, just a note...yes, a new volcano is possible around here, but so far not likely in Verdi. Better chance for that up at North Lake Tahoe. The geologists here figured that the quake swarms up there 3-4 years ago was the result of magma moving under the north end of the lake about 20 miles deep.

There's also this weird undersea earthquake swarm off the coast of Oregon going on:

Didn't Lake Tahoe form basically by a volcano (Mt.Pluto) damming up the valley that was once there?

Tahoe basin was formed by faulting, but the lake might have had both an ice dam during the ice age, and a lava dam from Mt. Pluto...both would have made the lake a bit deeper, but it still would have been a big lake without the dams. The lava dam might have only deepened the lake by 100-200 feet.

Interesting. I've reported some of these earthquakes online, and one of the observations I included was that the movement was side to side, not rolling. I thought it was east to west, but after you wrote that (SE to NW), I went hunting for a compass (no luck).

Was out of town Friday afternoon until today so I missed all of the excitement, but none of the cleanup. We (and neighbors) have cracks in the walls; broken glassware from the kitchen cabinet, multiple pictures fell off the wall, and items were thrown out of other cabinets. But it's weird how some places in the house appeared to have been affected while others were not. In one bedroom some items were thrown off a bookshelf that is less than 4' high, while items on a shelf 10' up on the wall only moved a little.

Interestingly, I was talking to my Dad (a geologist) about these earlier, and he mentioned something about these being shallow and likely all strike-slip. He figures that given those facts, it's less likely that a Big One is imminent as part of the swarm. He says it's more likely that the built-up energy is being dissipated by all these smaller movements.

Thats what my girlie just told me. Couldn't feel them down here but she is freakin out at here house.

For all those with damage to your house, a girl in my health class parents are both siesmologists and she told me today if you have structure damage to report it to them so they can map the damages caused.

Now, since the quakes didn't knock the house over, the wind is trying. It is worse than last week when they had all the wind warnings up.

I heard a "Dust Warning" for Pyramid HWY on the radio today. That's a first for me.

It's cool, the paint on the SVX is pushing 2 years old, it was due to be redone.

I think I just felt another one.

Either that or a big guy just walked by my cube.

So we were talking about it today at school. If the "big one" comes out in mogul, is it possible that it could trigger the fault that runs through reno to start moving, then the faults up at tahoe? It seems like this all started after Wells got the 6.0 up there.

Do we have a pool going on how big the big one will be? I say 6.3.
