Default Forester needs some new tires

What should I get? I didn't like the Geolanders that it came with, too much road noise on the highway. Must be all season and economical.

How much snow performance do you want? The reality is that any tire that performs well in the snow really doesn't do great in the dry or even wet of the other 3 seasons. That is why most of us have 2 sets, winters and 3 season tires.

If it has to be a 4 season sierra tire, you want siping for it to have any level of snow/ice performance.

Go check tirerack test data and look at tread patterns and your price range. You might find a screaming deal with wheels on craigslist as well. Lots of Subaru wheels/tires out there.

Also, unless cord is showing, this is coming up on the wrong time to buy tires. As long as you avoid thunder storms, you can probably make it until fall to buy tires.

I don't know if it'd be apropriate for a Forrester, but I really love my Wintersport 3D's. I'd run them all year round, no problem. I think they're pretty quiet and perform great in any condition.

I would agree with the performance claims you're making, I've driven on mine nearly year around myself... but winter tires wear out in hot temps ridiculously fast. A set of M3's should last 5+ winters... mine are on winter 3, and looking pretty spent because I drove on them for most of a summer before picking up some 3 season tires.

How long do your M3's last when you're driving on them year around?

I think mine have about 3/4 tread left. This is their 2nd Winter, I don't run them in the Summer, I was just saying that I would (if I didn't have Summer tires on seperate rims). I'd say I have about 20K miles on the 3D's plus some fun runs after the Teen Survivial School and about 20 minutes on RFR behind a pace car. You're right though, they get a bit ripped up when abused.

I didn't realize that they'd wear faster in the Summer. Maybe something more Summer friendly is in order.

Only the first 33-50% of a snow tire tread is "winter" compound. Many have 2 sets of wear bars to delineate where that is in addition to where "minimum" tread depth are.

Once they reach that first taller bar, they become 3 season tires to be destroyed before the next winter.

The summer I was running that courier route to Sacramento and back I had M3s on the car. I sold those wheels and tires after $35k miles and they still had plenty of 3-season life left. I'm not sure I would specifically buy snow tires as my only set though. I have heard good things about the KDWS, and as others suggested, TireRack has info on this sort of tire in massive abundance.

Also, I can't believe nobody mentioned the RE01Rs anyway, just because.

Me and Al invented the Internets! Go pull your pants up over your underwear and then look up the word acronym.

I have no objection to them or other text messaging shortcuts, but "lawled" is just plain ignorant.

LAWZ is marginally acceptable when used in an appropriately derogatory or sarcastic manner. Sorry, you are probably going to need to look up 3 or more of those words as well.
