Default Sick Subies From Japan

Yes, I am jacking a ton of pictures from NASIOC but I know that not everybody visits there so...I am definitely a fan of Japanese Subarus. Except that whole equal length header trend...

Here's a link to the guys photobucket, nothing but Subies...

I like the Legacy. I also really like the black wide body coupe. I especially like the crazy negative camber.

Nothing like extracting the hot air from the radiator right into the hood scoop for the intercooler. WTF are these guys thinking?

Scott. Air flows differently on the other side of the world. Just like toilets.

They flush toilets with air in Japan?

Well Scott, I am not sure if you noticed or not, but it looks like the yellow bug eye has the intercooler upfront.

Looks more like an oil cooler core to me since it is only 1/3 width from what I can see. And you are still just pumping the hot air back into the engine compartment with the scoop.

What Dean said. That's the STi factory oil cooler that comes on the S202. The reason it's so visible is because for whatever reason (cooling? I wonder if they were trying to combat the high temps caused by the hot intercooler ) they've cut away the black upper half of the bumper.

"The Japanese" are far from dumb when it comes to all-out tuner cars, but that doesn't mean they don't have their share of idiots spending money. Their idiots just run Evos and FDs and STis instead of Camaros, Focii and DSMs.

Actually, I'm usually underwhelmed by JDM tuner cars. Sure they're impressive, and even fast, but they're usually like 60% go and 40% show. A real racecar is faster because it doesn't include shit like unnecessary body kit parts, unnecessarily large wheels with "hellaflush" fitments, stretched tires, etc that a tuner car has because it's just a mobile parts billboard.

I'm not saying they're not cool, but IMO something like a ALMS or Daytona Prototype car is *much* more impressive than a JGTC (or whatever they're calling that series these days) car that's so influenced by the tuner market in Japan.

What are you rambling on about? they cut something off their front bumpers so now they are going to run hot?

Are they not Running top mount ICs , and most likely use their factory spray? Ever put a pyrometer on your IC? i have. top mount + spray = amazing. at autoX where the speeds are low i get like a 30-40F drop if i spray versus no spray. and i've had my motor running well above the normal temp range and wedge a quarter for a lap and watched the engine temp drop all the way down the bottom of the normal range... (@ RFR) So really i don't get what you are trying to point out.

really though maybe highlight what you are talking about cause i don't see it and it does sound interesting to check out.

That's why I said tuner car, not race car. JGTC is where you look to see what Japanese cars should look like with a full race build, of course. But tuner cars are more about falling somewhere between a somewhat disciplined street/track build and a true race car. I wouldn't say that the aesthetics of the top tuners cars is a negative except when it's things like "extractor" hoods that divert hot air over the radiator.

It was pretty clear that Scott was commenting about the extractor hoods that pull hot air out of the radiator and dump it straight into the hood scoop, where it appears that the intercooler still resides on nearly every example of it.

See if you can follow along at home.

Hello, I'm awesome JDM tuner man! I have an s202 STi! I'm going to put this sweet carbon fiber hood on my awesome car. But I'm not going to bother to notice that there's a heat extractor on it that might block the air to my intercooler, or worse, will feed hot air from my radiator right into the hoodscoop for my top mount. Hey, how come ever since I put this sweet hood on my car, everything seems to run hot? I better cut my front bumper up and move my license plate off to the side to try to get more air to the radiator, that should help!

Get it now? The hood could be making the car run hot, so he cut out the bumper, rather than get a proper hood or go back to the stock one. Or maybe he just wants to show off that oil cooler. Who knows, I was just pointing out the possibility of irony.

Now, how you got going about water spray is beyond me. Whether or not it helps that poor schmuck is secondary to the fact that proper air to the intercooler will work even better. OMG, what if he ran waterspray AND had air blowing over the intercooler!?!? By your logic, you might as well just ditch the hood scoop for aero reasons and just run waterspray on it alone, because as you're implying the waterspray works independently of proper airflow... or perhaps you should consider that the waterspray might only work well with proper airflow.
