Default Clutch recomendations

Well i have a cool new problem in the rally car. The clutch slips on occasion. high revving starts (on pavement) and i was out trail driving and had to stop on a steep hill and when i tried to get going again i was surprised that i was slipping the clutch ..

I'm on what ever Kevin sold me for an epic deal a while back.. (subaru OEM) I don't think i need much of an upgrade . RS 2.5 motor with Delta cams .

anyone have a recommendation ?

For the rally car? Whatever the cheapest +1 clutch ACT sells that works with the OEM flywheel.

+1
I've got the cheapest ACT street clutch and it's held up to 3yrs of autox and a few track days.

For the rally car, I might be tempted to go 6 puck.

Exedy stage II? I don't even know if that exists for your car, but I was thinking of checking those out when mine goes. I have the Exedy stage I now and it's a little too slippery when launching. I'm like, "Hey, my foot is off the clutch, you can stop slipping meow!"

A sprung 6 puck might be decent. That's what I've got on my car now, and it's only slightly more streetable than the unsprung 4-puck that I used to have... but I've also got the harshest pressure plate and lightest flywheel they make.

I've got a 12.55lbs F1 Racing PROLITE Lightweight Chromoly Flywheel Mated to what ever clutch kit Kevin sold me a year back when i was in a pinch before a rally event.

I think it was OEM stuff. I'll take a look at the street clutch ACT makes

I think i just need a slight bump in holding power over OEM ..

For as little power as your car makes, might as well grab another $115 stock replacement off eBay. You can get 4 of them for the cost of the cheapest stage 1 clutch.

Swapping clutches every year is crazy. Get something beefier with a stronger pressure plate. I don't care how much power your car makes, I bet you eat more clutch on every stage launch than the rest of the stage combined.

Meh, probably, but it's still not much... launch on dirt/gravel isn't too hard on the gearbox/clutch assuming that car's got enough oomph to spin the tires.

But I'd still want a bit of a stiffer/stronger clutch if I were racing. The stock clutches are okay for street driving and the occasional track day/autocross, but why risk it as a failure point on a rally car? I'd get something a little more heavy-duty. Plus a stiffer clutch makes the car faster on up-shifts and wears less 'cause it slips less.

I Definitely get the most clutch wear on the start of each stage. (unless i have an off and get stuck or near stuck , or i stop to try and pull someone off a berm) but so far that's only been twice out of 13 rallies. or twice out of ~~ 150 stage starts.

Now that my car is AWD and 2.5, I'm not sure if I'm getting an Ideal / Optimal launch with the rally tires on the car I can launch at 4K with almost no wheel spin (or it feels that way) Guess i should check with people who maybe watched me start at the reno RallyX if i had much wheel spin on my starts..

don't want to risk slipping on aggressive up shifts so a bit of overkill on the clutch would be good.

F1 Racing Stage 2 Clutch Kit Impreza 2.5RS 98-06
Horsepower Rating: 287 HP / Torque Capacity: 280 ft/lbs

Nope I'm still Cable Clutch. I like how it feels more than my STI clutch pedal.

hydraulic clutches are stupid , waste of money and loss of connection between driver and car. too bad car manufacturers don't make cars for "drivers" anymore .... lol

Cables stretch/flex/break. Hydraulic fluid is incompressible. Try bleeding your clutch in the STi.

Maybe i should put a new line in my rally car.. having that break on stage would suck really bad.

oh and I'm probably way past due a clutch bleed.. that's actually a great idea.

Is there a recommended interval for bleeding the clutch fluid? I've never done it.

When it feels like crap, it's time to bleed it.

My closest in class competitor starts at 4:01 He's on a 4.44 final drive, looks like he got a better start than i did. I think he revved a bit higher , Looks like he gets a little bit of wheel spin. where as i really didn't

skip to 5:00 for my start. I believe that was revving to 4,000 with a quick clutch slip. it caused a tiny bit of clutch smell.

Also is launching every stage like the #12 car going to be harder on my car (excluding the clutch and tires) I'm not going to break anything am I?

I ended up going with this btw : F1 RACING STAGE 2 PERFORMANCE STREET CLUTCH KIT SET
its cheap , its rated at "280HP" which i highly dought, but if it can hold 180HP i whould be set.

QC/build quality on the F1 eBay kits is really spotty. Check it out REALLY closely before you install it.

I'll check for that thanks.

i noticed they did not include the throw out bearing retention clips with the kit. (or they hid them)
