It's ok huh? I saw that coat hanger on the garage floor, but I didn't know it would strike again.

So? Did you get the hubs taken care of last night Scott? Are they at Lithia? What are your plan?

I got the worse hub off... but I couldn't break the passenger side axel nut loose.... and I tried w/ my breaker bar with my jack handle over it... so that's like a 5 foot lever arm. It took about an hour to get the 1st hub off, and after another 3 hours, I couldn't get that one nut loose.

I'm going to take an extended lunch and see if I can't press the bearings out with a big c-clamp and some sockets. If that's a no-go, then I'm off to Lithia.

If I can get the left front taken care of, and the wheels balanced, I should be good for this weekend. In the off season, I'm going to try to figure out what it's going to take to be able to re-pack bearings myself... which means getting the propper tools.

At this point, I figure, unless it involves something inside the motor or tranny, or body work, I should be able to fix it myself. Car repair is just a matter of having the right tools and time to do the work... the only reason to pay a mechanic to do the work is if it involves fabbing parts, or non-bolt-on repairs. I'll be damned it I'm going to pay Lithia $80/hr to do a job I can do myself. Especially since I'd much rather bring Joe and Nate my business for the repairs I can't do myself.

Yea.... another $225 spent. I now have new wheel bearings, new inner and outter seals, and new axle nuts. In a box.

I dropped the hubs, new bits, and some RedLine CV2 off at AIMS machine shop on Glendale. They're gonna press the new bearings into the hubs for me... hopefully by the end of today, but more likely they'll be done tomorrow morning sometime.

Also, because the right-front axle nut was so fused, I pulled that hub w/ the axle still attached, so they get the honor of torching that nut free for me. I put a rediculous amount of torque on the nut (enough to bend my 1/2" socket wrench!) and it never budged. WTH did Indy Auto do when they reinstalled that thing!? Or perhaps, the baking it went through at RFR welded it on there.

Hopefully, the labor cost for all this won't be too much.

Weak Sauce To The Max. (tm)

AIMS just called me... the left front hub is toast. The bearing failed and chewed up the inside of the hub to the point where it needs to be replaced. Whee! I really like being broke. I guess I'm off to Lithia to buy another one at a rediculous markup.... assuming they've even got one.

Okay... AIMES called me, everything's ready to be picked up! They charged me only $65, aka 1 hour of labor, for the bearing swap, and they even packed the bearings w/ the RedLine grease I supplied!

Hell, if it's only $65+parts for a pair of bearings, then I'm not going to bother with my own press for a bit. As long as I'm proactive about getting them re-packed every few thousand track/autoX miles, I shouldn't need new bearings for a long time. Plus the StopTechs should take care of any major heat issues up front, which means I'm good to go for a while.

I'm going to pick up all the parts today at lunch. Let's just hope there are no issues re-installing the hubs and the RF axle that had to come out!

Amen.

Plus the guys over there seem cool. And I think Greg (the main man) is old school. All the other customers in there talking to him were getting engine rebuilds and parts for their street rods, and the place it littered with giant V8 crank and camshafts.

I'll come git ya around 11:30 or noon.
