we had a total revalation today, these wheels will not fit your '05, they are for an '04 bolt pattern only, oops..

Why would they (Subaru) do a thing like make two different lug patterns?

Same reason they do things like completely change the ECU firmware every year, and a bunch of other random meaningless changes seemingly meant only to thwart our attempts to mod them.

Actually, in the case of the new bolt pattern, it's because they went to a different hub with stronger bearings.
