Default Homeowners trying to shut down Altamont Raceway

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1251686

Here's the NASIOC thread on it... some decent links to the website for the retards that bought land between the freeway and the track and are now pissed about the noise from the track.

It's too bad the track officials screwed up by running a drift event as an autocross to skirt the rules... they would have had their use permit easily.

Just like those people that buy a cheap house near an airport, and then complain about all the noise the planes make.

I saw this on the news the other night, the only events they are tring to cancel are the drift events. They have no problems with the Nascar events, like the one being run there this weekend. One of the owners was complaining about the tire smoke pollution.

Welcome to Laguna Seca... Restricted hours and noise limits are in place due to idiots who bought near one of the oldest world renowned tracks in the country and then complained.

In the past couple years, I believe they have even gone so far as to try and shut it down. I think they only stopped because property taxes would have had to be raised significantly to offset the loses and possible lawsuits from neighboring communities.

That's not what their website says:

http://www.betteraltamont.org/index.html

Quote:
Why do some residents of the Midway Road, Grantline Road and Patterson Pass area in the Altamont (Citizens for a Better Altamont) have opposition to the changes the new owners have made and want to make to the Altamont Motorsports Park (AMP)?
That is a very good question. Some of the reasons the residents are opposed are as follows:

- There are no "buffer zones" between the racetrack and the community on the west, south and east sides of the speedway. Decibel levels generated from the ractrack exceed those that are allowed.

- During the racing season the community is faced with an increase in property damage, trespassing, theft of personal property, privately-paid for dumpsters being used, increase in fire danger, increased traffic, increased noise and now lights that stay on late into the night adding to the light pollution in this area.

- There is no infrastructure set-up (and as far as I know of, planned for, just like the additional of Mt. House increased traffic on our roads) to handle this increased traffic. We have no stop lights in the area. The sheriff is at least an 1+ away. Midway Road and Patterson Pass Road are small winding country roads with little to no shoulder not setup to handle big racing rigs as well as a significant increase in traffic.

- Racing rigs as they go to the racetrack travel and higher than posted speeds down the middle of the roads because the roads are not wide and have no shoulder. They have been observed throwing lit cigarettes out the window as well as rolling right through posted traffic control signs.
Not a single mention of drifting or tire smoke. In fact, the drift events are basically drift autocrosses, which means no race haulers, which seems to be a primary concern. It's the NASCAR events that will tax their specifically called out issues.

The Tire Smoke part isn't in there but it's the same lady who said it.

Dean and I were just talking about the whining about Laguna Seca the other day... I just doesn't make any sense at all buying/building a house next to a race track and then complaining about the noise. This astounds me.

This brings to mind the old lady who spilled her McD's coffee on herself and then sued because it was hot. No shit it's hot!! It's SUPPOSED to be!

What astounds me is that they were able to make LS impose such regulations when the race track was there first. You don't move next to an airport and then get the planes to only fly out when you are at work. Or move next to a freeway and say that it must be closed when you are sleeping. That's the part that gets me.

To defend her a teeny bit (not that she really deserves it), the coffee was waaaaaaay too hot anyway. So it's McD's and her fault, but that means it's McD's fault.

I watched that clip and I can understand if the woman is mad about drifting being done on a public street or property damage being done. But in no way should that effect what is being done ON the track. I dont really know how they would mandate racing going on outside of the track but I am sure there is a way.

Why does the coffee thing *always* come up? I think I've ranted about it at least twice now on SECCS...

McDonalds was brewing their coffee at ridiculously high temperatures because they could get a few more cups out of a bag of grounds. They even had internal memos about the coffee being too hot to be safe to drink, and intentionally ignored them to make a few extra bucks. The lady that sued them, sued *only* for her medical costs, it was the jury that awarded her the huge amount of money which in reality was equivalent to only *one day* of income from McDonald's sale of coffee, and that value was later reduced at appeal.

The McDonalds coffee lawsuit may be one of the *worst* examples of a frivolous lawsuit on the books. It's really actually a terrific example of our legal system *should* work to protect individuals from corporations that have enough money to bully their way though the courts.

There shouldn't be *any* drifting going on outside the track. If there is, then it's illegal, and it's on the individuals being idiots on the street, and not the track's fault. It's the same deal if non-drifters were racing up and down the street outside the track.

The fact that it's "drifting" has nothing to do with anything. Hell, I don't even know why the use permit has to have "drifting is allowed" spelled out on it... does the use permit for regualr racing it have a clause for cars that spin out during a normal race?

I think you're right. Karma's a bitch sometimes, McD's got what it deserved in that settlement.

On topic, the couple of people that make up this Altamont "community" are retarded. But that's a redundant statement, because they live in Altamont.

There's nothing up there but a few ranches & mobile homes, the track doesn't impact anyone but their next door neighbor. Their (hypocritical) needs for peace and quiet are far outweighed by the value of that track to everyone in a 1-2 hour radius that uses it IMO. And oh yeah, the track was there first as usual.

Ah, I was unaware of the "entire" outcome of the suit, simply of the basics of it, which didn't make any sense to me.

In that particular case, yes, McD's was apparently trying to "get one over" on the public, but it only came to mind due to the initial sense of "i'm suing you because I'm an idiot". That one was a poor example, because I didn't know all the details.

The overall point I failed at making ( ) was there's way too many MORONS in the world who are allowed to sue/complain/harass simply because they are MORONS! it pisses me off.

This guy that's suing built a multi-million dollar home up there in 2005. I don't think this "community" is anyone but him and his wife. Dumbass decided in 1999 "hey this land is damn cheap, and that race track is going out of business, it'll be cool". He even planned on buying the track out when it failed. But AMP beat him to it, and rejuvenated the track just as he moved in.

This is the best part.

I think he needs a neighbor to build this across from him:

You would think that if he could afford to build such a nice house he could have installed better windows to keep out the sound. Rather then those POS single pane windows that he found at the dump.

And I love how he is standing behind his wife like "if I didnt say anything she would have stuck the 6" buttplug in my ass!"
