It's what you get when you hang out in Nevada too much.

Whoops. You might not be able to spell everything right after you get a 905.00$ bill from the IRS.

Mine was $1034... including the $500 I overpaid (so it's really only $534). But it still sucks considering the IRS has already confiscated like $10,000 over the course of the year.

You have to physically go to the post office or IRS, fill out an extension form, and submit it ASAP. You can;t do it online or over the phone which sucks.

You dont have to go to the post office. They dont even have froms at the post office. They have them at the library. And you can apply for an extension over the phone. Quick and easy.

I haven't received a refund in ages.

Hell, in 2001 I had to file Federal, Califonia State and Iowa State taxes. Thank god Nevada doesn't have state income tax, or I woulda filed those too!

I fucking *hate* taxes. All this garbage, math-related, busy work just to find out how big a check I have to write. Here's an idea... if the US gov't wants me to pay them more money, then why don't they friggen do my paperwork and tell me how much I owe? It's not like I trust the gov't to spend my money wisely, yet I'm the one doing all the work to find out how much of my monkey they're going to waste.

Austin's mom had the right idea (she's been a public servant, so she's got great insight on the way the gov't works): No income tax, do it all with sales tax. That way all the people that cheat on their taxes, or don't file, or make their money illegally are still paying taxes because they all buy stuff. Plus we could just about ditch the IRS completely since there's no more filing. All we'd need 'em for is making sure companies pay the tax for the goods they sell, and breaking up black/grey markets.

Trying to suddenly shift the Federal budget requirements from income tax to sales tax would destroy the economy. People would buy 20% less stuff when that federal 20% sales tax kicked in. While the system sucks, the income tax idea is better than the sales tax idea. What bugs me is that states are allowed to do both when the Federal gov't explicitally bans iteslef from using sales taxes (not counting import/export excises).

Eh? People will buy less stuff? Think of it this way: prices go up 15-20%, your income goes up 15-20%... proceed with life as usual.

Yeah... so screw you man!

Actually, I have a big issue with all the tax credits and stuff the gov't allows. The more money you have, the more money you make, the more loop-holes there are for you to skip out on taxes. The rich just keep getting richer. If all the billion dollar companies would actually pay their fair share of taxes the rest of us wouldn't need to pony up so much.

I don't have the actual numbers, but I'd bet if we went to a flat tax, the US gov't would make *more* money on a 10% flat rate than they make now with all the super-rich getting out of tons of taxes.

So wouldn't you much rather keep all of your income (a 15-20% increase) and pay 10% in taxes? That's 5% of your money back in your pocket!
