What Sam's thread spun off made me think about my first car. At least the first car I bought myself.
When I turned 16, I drove the family 72 Ford Galaxie. It always smelled like something was burning in the engine. I was always paranoid that something was going to happen to it before I got back home. Especially the times I snuck off to San Francisco with the car.... When I turned 19, the first car I bought myself was a 76 Ford Mustang Cobra II, white with blue stripes. I think I paid $2,700 for it. An airman shipped out overseas and had to leave it. It had racing harnesses, spoilers, rear window louvres, and a whopping 139 hp. Little did I know what I had then, but I did have alot of fun racing it up Hwy 50 to Tahoe. It met an untimely death in the parking lot at Harvey's Lake Tahoe when the engine caught fire. ![]() |

Sweet! My first car was a 95 maxima..( I know, a real beater
![]() Since I went to High School at galena, here in Reno, before anything else was built down there, we had to speed to Burger King or Taco Bell by CompUSA for lunch, a long ass ways from Galena..I drove a lot, because Maximas fit "Infinite chicks" and we could get there quick... Good times...

Like in the other thread:
1984 Buick Regal Limited. I was young enough (and stupid enough) to have way to much fun with this car. The driving-with-your-feet-while-out-the-sunroof-while-cruise-control-is-on technique was always fun. It did get me to and from Pyramid and Tahoe many times but began to hate my guts and began to always overheat. So I sold it, bought a pool table and went to college without a car.

![]() ![]() You want the 140mph downhill slide on the Grapevine or the miracle flip? ![]() That car stood up to so much crap it was unbeleivable. 1986 Camry LE. 6-speaker Pioneer setup, big sony amp, 12" sub in the back. 15x6.5 Konigs (went through 2 sets); I had to roll the fenders to make 205/50/15's clear. Tokico struts, a Grant 3-spoke steering wheel, custom badgeless grill, 100w fogs, etc, etc, etc. I jumped it, abused it down dirt roads, did ebrake turns with so many people in the car the rocker panels hit the ground. I still miss the damn thing ![]()

The first one I actualy owned was a hand me down from my brother.
197? Ford Gran Torino station wagon with peeling vinyl imitation "woody" panels on the side. Known as "Son of Meat Wagon". Electric rear window, and the rear gate would fold, or open like a door... Ugly, but a strong V-8, and would haul 15 people+ semi comfortably to 49 cent taco night at Del Taco in college.

One of the most fun cars I ever drove when I was younger was a Renault R8 Gordini... Rear engine 4 banger with quite a bit of power. They were actualy raced quite a bit in Europe

Dean, that Renault kicks ass! I wouldn't mind finding a little car like that, or a 510, or equivalent for an AutoX car. Theo's got the right idea w/ his Ghia... a small old car, with lots of cheap parts for racing!
Anyway, as I mentioned before, my 1st car was a '86 Ford Escort 5 Door Automatic. That thing couldn't get out of its own way, nor could it safely drive on the freeway at 65mph. But it was still able to pile a bunch of people into (including hiding underclass chicks in the hatch under a blanket) to go to lunch in High School. ![]() However, I learned to drive in my mom's '92 Camry V6. That thing actually had some guts. 3.0L all aluminum V6, 185hp! IIRC, it's 0-60 was the same as that year's Mustang GT... I'm not sure if that's good for the Camry, or bad for the Mustang. ![]() ![]()

![]() Damn that truck was fun. It had a hole in the firewall that was big enough to let water in, but subtle enough for me not to notice. By spring time, I literally had weeds growing in it. The dial radio would change channels if I took corners too fast. Was white on the outside, red underneath (showing in some spots, like the bed). Oh man, I miss that beast. Sorta.

After many lonely nights, playing Gran Turismo, I decided to purchase a 2 gen. Mazda RX-7. I workd for a year at a fast food resturant to buy that car. It was an 88 n/a 5 spd. I payed 1600 dollars for it. I learned everything i know about drifting, from that car. Of course, i didn't know what drifting was back then, it was so much fun getting the rear end to push out. Which led to its demise, in an unfortunate "drifting" accident, 16 hundred dollars well spent.

My first was a 1968 VW bug that was handed down to me from my mom and dad who bought it new in 1968! I drove it like a race car though and my dad had to keep telling me after I would blow something up on it that it was not a Porsche and my reply to him was " I should have a Porsche". Then I got a 1994 Mazda Miata that I wish I still had for a track car

Wow, might I be the only one who's first car was a Subaru? When I was 18 I bought an 85 Subaru GL wagon, with all the B-day and X-mas money I had got through highschool ($2500, IIRC). It was a 2WD A/T, and the best part was that the rear seats folded nearly flat, with room for 2 to, uh, lay down back there. I'll let that speak for itself.

My first was 91 Cavalier. I dont really count it because my mom totaled it. She hit a dear going 90 through Washoe. My first car I would say was my 71 VW bug. That car was amazing. It looked alright, ran alright, but it left me with enough storys to entertain my friends. My first "drifting" experience, scraping the ice off the inside and outside of the windsheild on the way to school, getting road head for the first time (I shifted into fourth and hit her in the temple with the shifter), too many to list I guess. I miss those days...
