Oil Leak...
I went and looked under my car today and noticed that a hell of a lot of oil is covering parts other than the headers.... thats no bueno. I did some research and heard the most common problems are with the oil pump, valve covers, cam seals, and/or PCV cover. Input is needed, because my father and I are taking it to his shop tomorrow. It would help narrowing it down, knowing where to look. Thanks fellas.

yeah, take some pictures. Get a white paper towl and get under the car and rub around to where you *think* it could be comin from. If it's not there, just rub other places. I know it's pretty noob, but that's how I usually find mine if I dont know where they're coming from.

after some amazing detail work done by myself, , I found that its a timing cover gasket. Nothing to special, but i have to remove my radiator and pulleys to get to it... what a piece of shit. j/k, but it was blowing back onto my headers so its nothing to big

Yes, I'll fix it for you. Again.

I don't too much about the 2.5s, but if it's anything like the 2.2s --- if it's coming from the timing cover, that means something underneath the cover (cam seals, mainseal, maybe). If you have to go in that far, get the mainseal and timing belt changed while you are there! You definitely want to be sure about leak location before starting that job!!!
GL!

What he's telling you is that since you are going through the labor of pulling everything apart anyways, you should change the timing belt and the crank and cam seals even if they aren't leaking. Unless they have been recently replaced already that is. It's worth the cost of the extra parts to do it now, while you have everything torn apart.

Well I happen to work at Napa, so tell me what you're driving and I can find out tomorrow if we have what you need.

What ScottyS was actually saying is that there isn't supposed to be oil in the timing cover to begin with, so the actual leak is the oil pump, crank main, or a cam seal. Basically you're going to want to do the timing belt and replace every seal you can get to. Once one goes, the others won't be far behind.

Haha! Would you believe I was looking around under the car today, and noticed some seepage from MY timing cover??? It's all good, because I was about to do the timing belt anyway! It's just funny because of this thread...
Darn, I guess it got moved up on the schedule...

Well none of my books list the crank or cam seals for the DOHC 2.5 motor. They show them for the 2.2L, maybe someone knows if they are the same or not. Anyways, here's what we do have. All prices are plus tax.
Timing belt - $48 Water Pump - $60 (not required, but if it's still the stock pump you might as well change it) If the 2.2L seals are the same as the 2.5L, then they are only like $4 each. If they are different it looks like you 'll have to get them from Subaru. I can get them at a discount there as well, since NAPA has an account with Lithia. I think we get like 15% off or something like that. |
