Thank You...

My 24hr/1500+ mile drive starts tomorrow(Wed.) after work. Debbie & Rachael Fly out Fri.

I hope to make Elko Wed. night, and then cover 12 or more hours Thursday, and the last 8 or so Friday putting me in Topeka by 5Pm Friday.

Saturday & Sunday is the ProSolo Finale which we snuck into. 42, and 142 STX.

ProSolo is a combination of autocross with a drag strip type start and mirror courses for the 2 cars starting side by side. 2 runs on each side, morning and afternoon Sunday, and then 2 more on each side Sunday AM. Normally, we would then do head to head eliminations on Sunday afternoon, but in this case, only people who really qualified for the ProSolo Finale get to play. But hey, we get 12 runs a piece on the same site we compete for the Solo2 titles on Tues. and Wed. for practice and tuning, so I am not complaining...

Monday is an off day.

Tuesday and Wednesday are our days to compete at The Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships We run on the South Course Tuesday, and North on Wed. I run first in 69 STX (42, and 24 were taken, so WTF... 69 it is) Debbie runs 4th in 42 STXL. Dave Deborde also runs Tues./Wed. in 77 AP in the third run group.

Results should be posted nightly, so feel free to check our progress Tuesday night. Our hotel has broadband, so we will likely be on-line if not running, working, walking the courses, asleep, or eating. We can't promise to many pictures, but our team photographer, Rachael will be with us, so you never know.

Thursday and Friday are a bunch of other classes, but we will be done...

At some point I start heading home, hopefully to arrive mid day Sunday, or earlier...

I am basically ready except for my bloody race wheels/tires... I have a brand new set of Azenis Sports on my RPF1s being shaved to 4/32nds, but they are not ready yet....

Default Live from Hays, KS

I have pictures from the road I will put up...

Day 1 Reno-Wendover 400 Miles, one Gnarly Accident blocking the "Hammer" lane just shy of Elko Makes the trip over 5 hours instead of under. :-)

Day 2 Wendover to Hays KS.... Just under 1000 Miles in 13 hours. Nightmare... Details to come... Moral, never ask a trucker for directions for a car... :? Not Matt, Pat H.

Pat did... He forgot I am going faster than most of the trucks, so the route that may be good for trucks may not be good for me.

Gotta run, more tonight...

Default Pictures

Sorry, very busy at the event. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I posted what I have taken so far in the Gallery. 2004-09-10 SCCA Solo2 Nationals Don't mind the bug splatter, and I'll dit them more later. Just no time... I promise to add captions as well, as soom are not self explanetory...

They are HUGE but I did not have time to shrink them. Out the door again for the second day of ProSolo... If we were eligible for anything, Debbie would be in 13th in L2, and I would be in 8th in STX, but as we are in the 20 or so car PAX "filler" group, I am currently in 4th, and Debbie 11th.

The great news is that though 13th in L2, The 2 STXL competitiors would be in 15th and 16th, so Debbie is rocking vs. the STXL Competition she will face Tues. & Wed. at the BIG SHOW!

Dave and Carrol showed up yesterday afternoon, so the whole crew is here...

Default We Suck

Well, Debbie, Dave, and I all agree... We suck.

We all had bad driving days, and ended up ending the day with our first runs being our best.

Tomorrow is another day, but we are probably all out of the trophies...

I'd be happy to get back into the top 1/2 of the class, as I believe would Dave and Debbie...

Maybe the North Course will be kinder to us...

Oh, and there is a new street tire of choice over the Azenis sport... It is the Falken GRB FK-451 in 245/35/17 shaved to 2-3/32nds or less and run at 50+ PSI because of the soft sidewalls.... Oh, and they are $150+ shaving + 1/4 the life of Azenis sports.

I took a ton of pictures of the Subbie competitors rides, but have got to get some sleap for tomorrow...

Well, we drove better today, but the cone gods were not kind...

I ran in the rain this morning, and had an good second run with a single cone. All I had to do was clean it up... Then the lightning and downpour came... We were help up fpr about 30 minutes. and though it was not raining anymore, the course was slower than on my second run due to huge puddles/rivers. The car would not turn in one and I Killed Kenny, the name of the cone they bet will be most likely to be hit on each course. In another puddle, somehow, a wave of water cam eover the entire front end of the car and windshield. This happened to a number of drivers, so I was not imagining it. So my second run with the cone stood as my best run dropping me to 32nd of 51.

It was dry by Debbie's runs, and she drove well. On her second run she had a great run that would have been fast time for her class, and vaulted her to 2nd or 4rd in class, but she hit 2 cones we know of, and 2 others nobody saw, one of which the worker didn't even write a number down for... So on her third run, all she had to do was clean up that last run to trophy... Alas, again, the cone gods did not deam us worthy, and sent the round orange pyramids of doom flying... Her first run was still enough to move Debbie up to 5th.

Dave drove better as well, but had his orange ruberized vinyl magnet turned on as well, dropping his position as well in AP...

So while we drove better today, it was not good enough...

We had fun, and will definitely come back next year...

More later...

One upside to having been in Topeka last week, is learning that ProSolo is Fun! Some of you may want to consider trying it next year. It's very fast-paced, and you get 12 tries over 2 days, 6 on each side of a mirror course, and your best time on each side is added up for a total score. Drag race start, you line up on a light beam, and wait for a countdown meter, then the light bar sequence, then launch! Very exciting.

Here is a link to a picture from the ProSolo, an example of why everybody says the surface is so crappy:

http://www.solo2.org/gallery/albums/9/183.aspx
So, this is what Dean had to deal with, to set up the car's suspension to travel this surface. Not optimal.

Lots of social activities on & off the track. On Monday we attended the SCCA SEB Town Hall meeting, basically a big gripe session for competitors to vent about proposed changes to classes and their allowances. Attended banquets on Sun., Wed. and Fri. nights. Mon. night Evolution school instruction for past students, where instructors reviewed the race line for each of the courses, then across town to a Welcome Party (barbecue). Thu. was a competitors Talent Show (with free dinner - more barbecue). Not much in the way of spare time.

Unfortunately the team photographer's mother forgot the digital camera in the car at the airport, so our pictures are limited to what Dean took, along with a few from a disposable camera. But Rachel still got to be involved, she carried the flag in the pace car or race limo on Tue, Wed & Thu morning opening ceremonies. When we went to the Forbes Field Air Combat Museum on Friday, she also got to sit in a WW1-era biplane and learned how to operate the controls.

A good week, a couple of frustrating days, and lots of fantastic cars & people.

So that Falken is an existing street tire? Who would've thunk? I though you guys were referring to a new tire all together, but it comes from their street line...

It turns out it has the same compound as the Sports, but the sizes are sweet...

Looks like a Falken Azenis Sport w/ a more water friendly tread.
