I bet it takes them a while to get anything going since I believe Sprint is on CDMA/PCS, and Nextel is on GSM or something proprietary.

I would have thought Sprint and Verizon would mere since they are bot on CDMA/PCS, but what do I know.

Nextel uses something called iDen.

Sprint and nextel use the same technology but differnt names it is all 3g technology same type of tower but I think dean is right it going to take a while to merge the two types of 3g Sprint is having a problem with direct connect bleading over in to police and radio waves!

3G means third generation. Which in reality, neither Nextel, Sprint or anyone else in america uses. We're still at 2G and 2.5G (which some companies like to market as 3G, although it doesn't have the same features that 3G phones have).

Also, just cause technologies came from the same generation, it doesn't mean they are compatible. Every 3G standard I can think of is incompatible with others. Nextel's iDen and Sprints CDMA are vastly different networks, and it is going to cost quite a lot to merge the two.

I don't think the two operating networks will merge, I think its more likely that the compaines will stay as separate entites wirelessly, but be one entity in a corporate setting.

Basically what Nick's saying is that we'll need "dual-mode" phones if we want to use both the NEXTEL iDen and the Sprint CDMA towers to increase our coverage.

That's what Verizon did when they bought out a bunch of the smaller providers... in fact they had tri-mode phones, 2 digital modes and one analog, so they could claim they had "the most coverage in America".

So, perhaps we'll see some phones that will operate on both networks in the future, but my guess is we'll more likely see a slow migration of iDen antennas added to Sprint's towers, and vise versa. Unless both Sprint and NEXTEL decide to upgrade to a newer standard at the same time.

I kinda hope they just pick a new standard. Sprint is dedicated to Direct Connect, so whatever technology they pick will have to support that.

Well at least they announced the truly important news related to the whole merger...

The Nextel Cup Series name will stay unchanged through at least 2005.
