Actually, Prodrive uses them on Tarmac stages on the Impreza.

Water would seam like a bad choice for a cooling system for brakes. I've heard of circulating the brake fluid when not being used, and believe there was even mentionof a brake fluid cooler/radiator, but with the low BP, water doesn't sound like a great idea... Maybe I'm just not seeing it...

Quite possible. You could always just replace "water" with "liquid" cooling and use brake fluid or water/coolant mixture or whatever. The only component of liquid-cooled brakes I'm personally familiar with are the calipers themselves. Never looked into how the rest of the system typically works.

At least in the case of the trucks... water *is* used. And by "used" I mean, it's actually used up. They spray water on the brakes, the water converts to steam, the brakes get cooler. Try not to run out of water before the end of the race or you're screwed.

Ah... the AP/Alcon water-cooled brakes actually use a recirculating system either from the engine coolant, or a seperate radiator somewhere like oil coolers use. They have a seperate system of water passages cast into them.

Even the number of pistons is way overkill, unless they're going to be tracking it with the stickiest race tires in the world strapped on. Maybe.

The real reason for all the overkill is mostly marketing. They need all the "street cred" they can muster to go up agains tthe AMG SL55, M5, M6, etc. etc. etc. 8 piston liquid-cooled brakes sound way cooler than standard 6 pot brakes.

But I agree; in that segment, big fat rotors with good strong 4 piston calipers engineered properly would be about perfect for 99% of buyers.

Exactamundo. I was talking to one of the engineering guys from StopTech at SEMA and he was saying that for pretty much everything short of real high end race car stuff, 4 piston calipers work just fine even in the front. They make 6-piston kits because everyone thinks "OMG 6 piston rulezors!1!!", but they just end up shrinking the piston size because you don't need that much piston area to make the required brake torque.
