Snowboarding....Because gravity is cheaper than gas
|
![]()
So I need a set of winter tires but I have like 0 cash. I have a set of stock rims but they have kuhmo ectsa supra 712's on them which are just as bad in the snow as my re 750's. That are on the car now. I'm looking to get rid of the kuhmo's and get some snow tires. Anyone know of a place that would trade or someone that would want to trade?

Sombody in a similar predicament just posted this question. Perhaps you can find an option that works for you in that thread. http://www.seccs.org/forums/showthread.php?t=3903

The best you can hope for with "little or no cash" is a set of lightly used RE92s- which might not be that hard to come by.

I've got a set of RE92s on my stock 16" rims that I'm trying to get replaced with a decent set of snow tires, but I'm not sure how soon that will be.
They have 6000 miles and one autox spin-out on 'em ![]() There's a reason I'm replacing them, though. Most reviews I've read say the RE92s blow goats in the snow traction category.

Drive sane in the snow? Oxymoron? Or a conundrum? No, no that's not right. Well it's something that can't be done ok.

The RE92s are a decent All-Season tire. Nothing to write home about in any category, but with 6K on them, they should get you through the winter in Reno/Carson. Incline may be sketchy but doable if careful, and you can stay home in the real bad stuff. Otherwise, go read this thread, and run up some debt.Snow and Ice tires 2005

I've done Incline to Mt. Rose in the RE92's after heavy snow (and subsequent snow plowings) and I was stoked. Just take it easy...especially on ice.

I'm gonna be doing Dayton to Carson and back every day, and I hear from some Dayton locals that last year they required chains/snow tires a couple of times on the pass through Moundhouse. So, snow tires for me. That's the main reason. The RE92s seemed to handle yesterday's light snow/slush/heavy rain relatively well.

Yah, sounds like you'll want better snow tires although this year the snow shouldn't be as bad. Last year's snow level was a rarity.

I've never seen the road closed there...but that's just me. Doesn't hurt to be safe. Now probably a noob question but...are Mud and Snows different then All SEasons? It seems that they would be right? Or is it just a name difference?

Erm, as far as I know All Season and M+S tires are the same. . .? "All Season" = Rain (mud) and light snow. . .

IIRC tires like the Kuhmo V712 are technically M+S, but you'd be a retard to think it's a capable snow tire.

So if one had All Seasons as opposed to M&S's, the DOT people might possibly NOT let you by when chains are required?

![]() And I've driven in a snow storm with the 712's. It sucked, but I made it home. I would never do it again, and I only did it cause I got caught in a snow storm.

The only government recognized symbol is the M+S on the sidewall. The checkpoint guys mostly look for visible tread depth as you pull up.
Tire manufacturers have gone the next step and created their own "Snow" rating with logo. ![]() More details on M+S vs. Snow rated.

the 712's are what is on my stockers right now, there is no way that i would run these in snow. last winter i ran my summer tires all season, not smart but i come from the midwest ice and the snow out here wasn't that bad to drive on. This year I want to be better prepared to travel on powder days to the mountains and my snowboarding competitions which I have every weekend. I believe ray's tire exchange in reno has 1 set of used snow tires left for $40 a tire. They also said they may consider taking my 712's on trade.

Keep an eye on the Truckee/North Tahoe weekly free paper and the Sierra Sun, you can score fairly well in there with the right timing. Cant see your car profile as i write this, but Ive got some stock 14" steelies from a 96 2 door impreza with well worn hakkapellitta 1's on them, will kick down for free if interested. Theyre out in floriston. Seen better days, but will blow doors on 712's if the wheels will clear your brakes. PM if interested.
