The way out is through
Default Ginormous NorCal road trip! TONS OF PICTURES!

Well, JC and I represented SECCS on the NorCal road-trip from Truckee to Fort Bragg with the BAIC fellas. I recorded about 940 miles round trip, 503 of 'em getting from Reno to Fort Bragg!

The outbound trip covered Highways 89, 49, 70, almost ALL of 36 (which is a CRAZY road), 101, and a really fun section of Hwy 1. The return trip covers a cool section of Hwy 20 followed by boring old 5 and 80 .

We spent the night at Steve (Kostamojen)'s awesome beach house in Fort Bragg, where watched a bunch of Speed TV and TNN, instead of doing beach realated stuff. Yes, we're car NERDS.

But of course the point of the trip was not the destination, it was the driving to get there. The roads were pretty fun, with many dynamic conditions, due to the constant threat of rain. At least the temps stayed nice and cool the whole way!

There were 6 cars, split into groups A and B each made up of 3 cars. JC and I were the 3rd car of group 3, so we were dead last in the running order (which means we could take pictures of the whole group!). Every car had two people (but don't ask me who was in what, I've already forgotten). Steve had the cool idea of putting group letters on the cars so we could ID each other more easily. We also carried radios for the trip to keep in contact (which is HUGE when passing in the twisties, as the guy out front can let the people in the back know if it's clear ahead).

The Running Order, note the cool "B" sticker! :

Co-drivers started out the day driving 80E to 89N. This section of driving was pretty easy, with quite a bit of rain. When we hit Sierraville, we took 70W to 36W to Red Bluffs for lunch and a driver change.

Leaving Red Bluffs (with Jack in the Crack indejestion), the primary drivers lucked out and the weather cleared just in time to hit a crazy section of road. Serious roller-coaster action with awesome turns and insane elevation changes! The only issue was the large amount of rocks on the road from the slides caused by the recent rain. Thankfully the lead cars were good at radioing the trailers about the rocks! Part of 36 reduced to a single lane, and the rain started sprinkling. We even hit some road construction where *everyone* started doing thier drifting... 36 was one of the highlights of the drive, and we drove almost the whole highway till we hit 101 up in Humbolt.

The low light led to some interesting blur effects:

Arriving at 101, the rain had picked up pretty good. We changed drivers, letting the co-drivers drive 101 in the rain.

One of the cars decided to leave the group and continue down 101 to return to the Bay Area. The rest of us were in for a treat. The road dried up, and hwy 1 was AMAZING. The pace wasn't too crazy (like 36 had been), and I really got into the zone. I had the most fun driving this section. Perfect pavement, cool air, tight corners, and not much traffic. It was AWESOME!

The really tight section of 1 ened up dumping us out onto the coast where the ocean greeted us with clear skies! The rest of the drive was fairly leasurely into Fort Bragg.

Once we were there, it was Peanut Butter Rocket Time as Steve spent 20 minutes trying to get his crappy model rocket to work. Eventually we got off 3 launches then threw out that P.O.S. rocket.

[img:17cd0a7a46=700]http://www.seccs.org/gallery/Reno%20Meets/2003-08-02%20NorCal%20Road%20Trip%20with%20BAIC%20Guys/DSCF0431%20Beach%20House%20-%20rocket.JPG[/img:17cd0a7a46]

After crashing that night, we at McDonalds for breakfast (blech) then watched the Power Block on TNN for some terrific Super Tuners rice-fest. JC and I finally left around noon. The drive back covered hwy 20 all the way past Clearlake (which despite it's name is nowhere as clear at Tahoe ) to hwy 5. Since the camper traffic on 20 was getting unbearable, we opted to take 5 south to Sacramento, then 80 home to Reno from there.

The trip was really fun. We saw some of the most beautiful scenery in all of America on the trip! Big thanks to Steve for putting it together!! It was cool to meet some of the BAIC/Sacramento guys in person, and see their sweet rides, as well as hit some of the best roads in the country!

I want that Wagons Wheels and stuff. Looks like it was tons of fun. Did everyone stay out of trouble with Johnny Law?

No police issues. Though there was some need for calls on the radio like, "uhhh, guy's were' having to go over 90 back here to keep up with you.... slow down!" Not that the lead car were going all that fast, but due to the nature of 6 cars in a line the guys in back would have to slow down a bit occationally then speed up to catch up, and the only way to make up the distance on the lead cars was to haul ass.

Glad to see some of the shots came out ok. Not shots of me eating in the car though. That black wagon was badass. You got that "Super Street" style pic of my car Scott?

uh? There are way too many cops on that drive. Besides, we can barely get runs together to go up mount rose, maybe we should aim for a smaller excursion first  "A" for enthusiasm though!
