GST Motorsports to Campaign Subaru Impreza in 2006 NASA "25-Hours of
Thunderhill" Severe Endurance Race

HAYWARD, CA (November 23nd, 2006) – GST Motorsports, GOTO:Racing, and Grassroots Motorsports are joining forces to enter the 2006 NASA 25-Hours of Thunderhill Severe Endurance Race, campaigning a Subaru Impreza modified to take advantage of the liberal ES class rules.

“GST Motorsports is a new company serving racers and performance drivers, with experience building and tuning engines for teams running in Speed World Challenge GT, Grand Am Cup, U.S. Touring Car Championship, U. S. Pro-Rally, and California Rally Series, in addition to Time Attack cars, club racers, daily driven track cars, and even stock street cars," explains Mike Warfield, owner of GST Motorsports. "This effort is our first in-house effort, tying together everything we've learned over the years of building and tuning engines for professional race teams with our chassis setup and race strategy experience gained supporting GOTO:Racing in the Grand Am Cup series."

In a bid for the overall podium, the team's driving roster will include GOTO:Racing's professional drivers, as well as J.G. Pasterjak, Production Director for Grassroots Motorsports (GRM) magazine. Likewise, GOTO:Racing's experienced racing crew will join GST Motorsports’ shop mechanics to provide support throughout the grueling 25 hour event. The crew, shop mechanics, and team drivers are currently working together to build and set up the car, and look forward to their first test sessions in October.

Grassroots Motorsports is the how-to magazine for the new breed of racer and enthusiast. The magazine’s articles cover the entire world of amateur motorsports, from autocrossing to rallying and racing, as well as descriptions, tips, and tricks for souping up your own race or track car. In 2005, GRM’s 25-Hour effort was sidelined by technical problems. This year, GRM hopes to turn the wick up to 11 with GST-Motorsports and GOTO:Racing.

GOTO:Racing currently campaigns a Subaru Legacy in Grand Am Cup, and has been able to achieve two top-10 finish’s (5th place, Miller Motorsports Park and 6th place, Laguna Seca), win the Bernheim Improve Your Position Award (Laguna Seca), turn the fastest laps in a race (Phoenix), and generally finish in the top half of the field for the season, in their first year in the series.

The 25-Hours of Thunderhill is the ultimate test of car and team, where reliability is critical and better fuel management, careful tire wear planning, and judicious pit strategy can enable teams to pass opponents by pitting fewer times. GST Motorsports and GOTO:Racing team members bring with them experience from several previous 25-Hour events, with finishes at the top of their classes as well as on the overall podium.

Mike, I'm so stoked to see this effort coming together!! Congrats on the new shop/team/car/etc!!

I'd love to come out and help you guys with the 25 hr race if you're short-handed. I'm sure there are a few other Reno folks that'd be willing to help out as well if you need it (though it looks like you've got a pretty good set of experienced hands on board already!).

On a technical note, let me know if you have and oil issues on that car, I'm interested in seeing what you've done to fix it... I'm still fighting all the oil that my car pumps out of the valve cover breathers and I'm looking at aircraft air/oil separators as a solution.

Right now the car is retarded quick (fast enough that I set the fastest lap of the weekend at the NORPAC Time Trials Championship ), right up until the catch cans fill up... then I have to limp back into the pits to drain the cans.

Scott, we can't get anyone else on the crew listing but we would be happy to have you come and help as I am sure there are a ton of things to get done during the event.

As for oiling issues, I believe I have designed a simple system that works to keep the oil in the motor during extreme conditions, drop me a line offline to discuss this.

The car has a crazy rear diffuser and complete (nearly anyway) flat bottom, we do need side skirts though

The Christian is indeed Christian Miller from World Challenge TC, I totally agree he is awesome in fact we're lucky our whole driver line up is awesome.

Interesting Fuel Cell location. I guess it minimizes handling changes as fuel is used, but I would think it would further bias an already nose heavy car further forward...

This year is going to be exciting with our newly reworked L (Tommy and Mert have gone buck wild on this thing) We have got thing sorted on the heat management side and reworked all the wiring and piping, reversed the intake and made a custom intake manifold to boot. I will post picks when it gets back from the coaters on Friday. We felt that the 1.58's it turned at Thunderhill with the half ass setup work we did and 16.5psi was ok but since then we reworked the fenders for more setup control oh yea and added another 12psi of boost

Something else I wanted to mention was look out for the 07 widebody STI we have been preparing for Time Attack, should be pretty fast...

Mike, were you guys running STi knuckles on that car? Or did you fail the OEM L bearings? The '05+ STi hub conversion might be a good idea for that thing if you haven't already done it. Considering the money in that car, the uprated knuckles/hubs are cheap insurance.

Yes we run 06+ hub bearings all around.

We found a geometery issue cause heat build up in the rear which lead to the premature demise of the bearings.
