Car: 2004WRX Class: Baby-Hauler/GroceryGetter | Where to go to resurface a flywheel?

Is Reno Clutch & Brake the only place in town to resurface a flywheel? I just called them and they said it would be $40 which seems a little high to me.

Also, I just talked to Michael at Trans Craft (who does resurface flywheels) and he said that a wrx flywheel should technically not be resurfaced because of the construction. He said because it is a dual mass flywheel and due to the shape of the bottom it can't be securely mated to the table. He said that he has done a few before for in house jobs and they set it up with dial indicators and follow the flywheel the entire time to make sure its ok but, he doesn't recommend doing it. He would charge $50.

Yeah, as I understand it, my 05 Legacy GT has a dual mass flywheel, and was the first Subaru (at least in the new turbo era) to have one. When I was looking at options, I was thinking of going with a WRX clutch and flywheel from an '02-'06 since they were all single mass. In the end, I went with Exedy for an 02-06 WRX. Regardless, $40 sounds like a price I was quoted for resurfacing before I told them about the dual mass.

Take it to Reno Clutch and Brake, and pay them the $40. Since "Michael" has no idea what he's talking about, I wouldn't trust him with it. Just my opinion. Nick hit the nail on the head.

Joel, reno clutch and brake..... they just did the S4's flywheel and its a dual mass..... and they did the Sti's and the TR's and a whole bunch of honda's in the past, $40 is a good price.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will do that. I guess the first thing I can do is post a picture of my flywheel to see if it looks like it needs to be resurfaced. I will do that today.

With all the problems you had with your clutch, I'd think a fresh surface would be good regardless of how it looks, but I have no idea what I'm talking about, just a guess.

At one point, RCB advertised free flywheel turning with clutch purchase... not sure if that is still true, but worth considering if you are buying parts as well.

I already have a new Exedy stage 1 organic clutch kit sitting in the garage. Cody, I am currently running the gruppe-s LW flywheel which is in my opinion, the cause of my problems. The flywheel that I am talking about resurfacing is the stock flywheel that I kept from the first time I replaced the clutch. You do have a good point though, I don't want to really horse around with the clutch since I am growing tired of having to take my transmission out.

That's the clutch I have along with an Act Streetlite flywheel. It'll be nice for you to get rid of the deceleration noise going back to the stock flywheel. I am happy with my setup though. What are the reviews like on the Gruppe-S FW?

I have never searched for the reviews and I think that was my downfall. At the time they were selling the clutch for a price that no other vendors could touch and it was packaged with their LW flywheel. I don't think I am the only one to complain about it but really I have nothing to compare it to. All I know is that I have about 5 friends with the same exedy stage 1 clutch including you who say, "yeah that feels different than my clutch".

Yeah, so once I go back to the stock flywheel it should be good. If not, I guess I can try to figure out what else is wrong.

I'd still recommend the ACT Streetlite if you're able to spring the $230 bucks or so you can find them for. Excellent mod. I've used 3.

Here are a few pictures of my stocker. There was some rust on it from leaving it outside a little last year. I just scrubbed it off with a little sandpaper.

The starter ring looks a little chewed up, and its pretty rusty, ever thought of just buying a new one? It cant be that expensive....lol, just check the price on one from audi for the S4 and you will gladly pay for a new one for the subie.....Oh and be sure to change that throw out bearing...it looks nasty.....I know you know, but never hurts to remind.

My stocker only saw the stock clutch... and your mom! Anyways, I just decided to resurface the clutch myself. I think I did a pretty swell job. I will post pics tomorrow.

Ya, but I didn't try to start the car when it was already running a billion times and then leave it outside to get nice and rusty.

I'm just playing. The wear on the starter ring is very minimal and all the rust came off pretty easy. I took it to Reno Clutch & Brake which is now at the top of N. Edison. They did a great job, had it back to me in 20min and it only cost $30. Also, they gave me a price on the clutch kit and if you figure in the cost of having your flywheel resurfaced for free by them, they pretty much match the best internet deal and you get plus the bonus of them being local to honor the clutch warranty.

I just took my old clutch out(exedy stage 1 organic) and placed it next to my new clutch (exedy stage 1 organic). Clearly the clutch disc is different. The pressure plate appears to be the same even though it has different numbers on it. So either Exedy upgraded their stage 1 disc in the last 2 years or Gruppe-s sold me an Exedy OEM replacement disc the first time. I tired to do some searching on NASIOC but it seems the site is down. Does anyone have any ideas? Also, the new throwout bearing has a lot of high temp grease on the arms. Should I clean a little off or just clean it all off?

That may very well be the OEM disc. Can you see any numbers on it still?
