Are dual lug pattern rims weaker than single lug pattern drilled?
I'm looking at some Braid Gravel Rally rims : the acropolis http://www.teamilluminata.com/Shop/Braid/compcast.htm http://www.teamilluminata.com/Shop/B..._Multi_big.jpg I was talking about it with a friend (non racing buddy) and he was wondering if they would be weaker, specifically if they would break at the lugs. Out of all the Alloy rims i've seen damaged, broken its always been on the outter edge, a bend, or a chunk breaking off. I've seen a steel rim, get ripped off the hub, lug nuts still on the studs at a rally cross.. ![]() anywho would anyone really be worried about the rim breaking around the lugs? I want to start buying 15X6 or 15X6.5 rims with a dual pattern. so i can use them on my current rally car, but they will be able to work with an 05+ STI . |

But they will clear the FHI 4-pot/2-pot calipers specifically sold by Subaru for 15" rally wheels used in Group-N racing that Alex is probably getting.

To answer your question Alex: they're probably a little weaker. But I doubt it's enough to make a real-world difference. The way the wheel mates to the hub means the fatigue point should be outside the circle of the bolt holes, so even if there are extra holes, they probably won't cause the wheel to fail... at least not at some level of impact that wouldn't otherwise ruin the wheel/tire.
You're probably more susceptible to failure when running them on the smaller 5x100 holes, but that would be on the lighter car anyway. The real question is: why would Braid sell the wheels if there was a significant strength issue?

No chance of breaking a wheel off at the lug center, even with dual PCD.

Perfect! And yes I'd be eying those : FHI 4-pot/2-pot calipers . not sure what stock 05 STI Brembos sell for these days (probably not enough to cover the difference) looks like the FHis are around $775 resold from an abandoned project (found a full set on nasioc)
If anyone has a set of those and wants to trade for 05 STI Calipers LMK. I'm down to trade ![]() ![]() |

FHI 4pots usually go for around $450 for the fronts (at least that's what I got for mine, 3 times I think...) And honestly, you don't need the rears. The sliding caliper vented rotor setup from the old turbo Legacies is more than sufficient and saves weight, for a couple hundred bucks.

Oh, and if I didn't already have Brembos on the FXT, I'd give you the 4pots on the wagon in a heartbeat.

I think the bias is pretty similar, but that is a good point.

I've had some really ugly wear on my old sliding front 1 pots due to a sticking (slide bolt?) ... I'd like to avoid that and keep a good braking balance. cheap is good and cheap spares is great.. the legacy route doesn't sound that ideal.. Except that i could probably get a set of rears, with spares at the same cost...
hmm.. Great info though. ![]() |

Uber, might have to take a peek at those . I need to do a big post season tear down, fix up, and minor mods before the 2012 season starts.

Yeah, I ordered one through KSpeed weeks ago. Anytime you want to swing by for those pins, let me know. They're here on a shelf in the garage.
