Well, my 100K motor is burning and blowing oil most anywhere...
After looking at all the options, I started looking for a low mileage complete long block... What I found was a complete engine with everything that is normally bolted to it still attached out of a wrecked <9K mile '07 STI!!! this includes VF43 turbo, anything with a belt attached, headers, intake, etc... if you open an STI hood, about the only thing you see in the middle of the engine bay that was not included was the intercooler. The motor is now in my garage, and it appears to be what was advertised. Unfortunately, it looks like I am going to have to move my '04 engine wiring harness over as the passenger side bulkhead connectors have changed significantly... ![]() ![]() I'll take pictures of it later, but for now, here are the pictures of the wreck it came out of... P.S. Once installed, the car will be BSP legal if I want to go get stomped by a yellow Corvette... P.P.S. Seņor Cheap Bastard got a pretty good deal he thinks on this, so hopefully selling off the parts from the old engine should pay for a significant portion of the "new' one.

Wow, that must have been some wreck! Sorry to hear that your motor is already giving up the ghost. Doesn't this seem to be a bit of an early demise? Any thoughts as to why?
And if anyone can give that yellow vette a run for it's money, it's you. Dooooo IT!

My original motor had 85K bone stock miles on it when I got it and then I started asking it to make a few more pounds of boost for extended periods of time at the track.... I am surprised it made it to 100K...
I probably damaged the rings asking hem to go a couple extra .0001" or so in the cylinders under more load and they were banging into any slight ridge that had been worn in the cylinders after 85K miles...

Interesting. I never thought of that before. Yet another reason for me to stick with the stock turbo. I'm at 90K miles now.

Well, the old motor is out... Took about 4 hours today by myself. Not bad I don't think considering I haven't done a Subaru Engine Pull before...
Now comes the fun part, trying to figure out what the bare minimum I can move over to the new motor. I know the wiring harness has to move, but we will see what else. One of my Group N motor mounts had broken, so it looks like I have to shell out for the Cuscos... ![]() That also kicks me out of BSP as a possibility. Maybe I should just get some new group Ns.

This is mostly a track car, so I am not really worried about the NVH...
The Beatrush mounts look interesting as well. ![]()

They look very similar to the Cusco mounts... are they polyurethane or delrin inserts instead of spherical bearings?

OK, the intake, fuel and TGV changed quite a bit '04-'07... Side feed vs top feed injectors, front only TGV controller/sensor, etc... Is there a benefit to top feed vs. side feed? What is it that the 2.5l WRX guys want? The top Feed '07 fuel system, or the side feed '04? I am debating doing the TGV deletes while I am here as well... Who all has done that? It looks like I can just buy the TGVless parts for $180, any reason to have Grimmspeed or similar do mine? Oh, can you take off the intake with the TGV pieces attached, or do you have to split them and pull the intake first?

You want the top feeds, there are a ton more injector choices available for the top feed. All WRX's have top feed IIRC, the only cars w/ the side feed are the early STi's that needed them to clear the AVCS solenoids on the heads. I'm running top feeds on my car, but I'm using the Perrin fuel rails to make it clear the solenoids. If you can swing it, try to keep the '07 fuel rails and top feed injectors.
Going to TGV deletes (are they SP legal? do you care?) is probably going to save you a ton of work rather than trying to convert your ECU to handle the '07 actuator/sensor package. Alternatively, if you don't care about keeping the top-feed fuel system, just pull the entire intake manifold off the '04 motor and slap it on the '07. The manifold is identical, but now you've just ensured compatibility with the injectors, TGV's, TPS, and whatever else is attached to the intake manifold. However, I think that may violate the update/backdate rules for SP which is one of the cool things that you were getting out of the full engine swap. I'd talk to Knucklesplitter about TGV deletes, he may be able to have you up and running in a jiffy if he's got parts in stock. Plus the weldless kit he sells for the '07 TGVs is only $52. ![]() http://www.kstech.biz/servlet/StoreFront

I sent Matt a PM.
TGV are legal as intake is open in SP... The only reason I wasn't SP legal is because I did not swap the long block as well as the turbo and could not prove the long block was identical. SP is really not my objective. Staying on the '04 ECU is important! I am still pulling wiring looms, but the injectors connectors appear to be the same or close enogh, and if I delete the TGVs, I don't have to deal with that change. There is some other weird stuff hanging off the '07 intake I don't know what they do... Anybody want to come by and take a look and help me figure it out? Anybody have an '07 shop manual?

A pay download site for copyrighted illegally duplicated material... No thanks... Find me a torrent.
![]() I hate to say it, but Kevin was right... Pulling the intake is probably the only way to move the wiring harness. If I had realized the TGVs came off with the intake, I wouldn't have unhooked as much stuff. ![]() The old intake is off the old block. I realize there are not as many side feed injector options, but in a quick search, there appear to be enough to suit normal mods. In my brief research, it looks like the stock injectors can be upgraded to 816s for about $200... Seņor Cheap Bastard likes those numbers. Is there really a compelling reason to swap to the top feeds? Especially when I can just drop my whole intake onto the new block and be mostly done. (after deleting TGVs and plugging some pump holes, etc...) What parts on the intake wear that I should swap? I was thinking about swapping throttle bodies just to have one with 90K fewer miles. Any sensors wear/fail over time? I think I'll wait to do the new intake after the front of the garage is in the shade... Maybe watch some NASCAR for inspiration. ![]()

Quick side by side photo... old engine is headless... And yes, you can remove the intake without removing the Turbo...

07 Intake and TGV removed...
Posted a parts for sale thread... There are at least 2 external changes to the heads I've found, so technically, a VF43 swap on a pre-'07 STI is not SP legal. Piping for the oil feed for the turbo in slightly different. The big one is the large vent in the back of the Driver's side head for the "air pump" hose attachment. I'll be using a KS-Tech block off plate, but perhaps this would be an ideal location to hook up a catch can???

Well, the '07 long block is in the car...
![]() ![]() Note to anyone doing a swap to a different block or tranny... Check the dowel pins to see what side they are captive!!!! I had the sucker completely in, but it would not go the last 1/2" on the driver's side... Conflicting dowel pins... Doh! The passenger side was fine. Waiting on some injector seals to get in Thurs. to put the manifold on... I think I'm glad I did the block without manifold attached. Much easier to see what the F you are doing... KS Tech TGV deletes done and Phernolic spacer ready to go... Too tired to go to SCCA meeting.

Damn, that took forever! I could have installed a motor, blown it up, and reinstalled it, in the amount of time it took you to swap long blocks!

I was in LV for over a week and was waiting on parts... I think I am up to about 12-14 hours work time including tearing down the intakes and moving parts. And shouldn't you be at the SCCA meeting?
![]() Not bad for my first swap. Hopefully the intake will be done and I can keep it under 20 total hours.

Its alive...
Started on like the tenth try... ![]() Plugging in the crank position sensor is a big help... Runs great. Ran some errands and did some logging. Gauges look OK, so we are good to go for the weekend... It shouldn't make a difference, but need to check the logs since I changed the turbo inlet hose.. Need to fix the steering wheel in the AM. When I was tightening the PS lines, I had to pull the linkage to the wheel and put it back one notch off... ![]() Anybody have CarFax? I'd like to have a copy of the print out for teh Donar car for my records.

The boost response issue you told me about last night - it may be due to the new turbo inlet and TGV deletes. It should learn a little and get the duty cycles right, but there is a chance those target ranges may need to be changed.
