That was a pretty sweet car.. it didn't even have a turbo and it was pretty cool. Like you said, too bad it's not here anymore... I don't know why Jesse thought it would be a good idea to all of a sudden "test the oversteer characteristics" on a little road at night at like 50mph.

He woulda been fine if it had stayed on the pavement... but once you're "off course", all bets are off. Dig a rim into the dirt and you find yourself on the roof. All I know is that if it happened to me, I would have totally lost my mind and turned into a cowering piece of crap too afraid to come out into the daylight. (Yeah, I'm a little too wrapped up in my car.) Jesse survived somehow, humanity intact. If I ever win the lottery, I'm gonna find a black '00 RS and do an STi conversion for a birthday present... I guess I better start playing the lottery.

Okay so I figure the entire story is needed here:
The car had just had its running boards painted to match the body paint black, the v5 wing had been put on painted to match as well. I had just installed a whiteline 22-24 adjustable rear swaybar and was testing it out on a back road at night. I had the bar on for about 2 weeks but had noticed on hard turns it tended to settle rather obnoxiously. A minor "clunk" could be heard as the bar twisted against a not tight enough bolt. I had tightened the nuts so many times I can't remember and they were a pain to get to due to some electrical box that sat directly in the way above the right rear wheel well. (Made it nearly impossible to install the heavy duty mounts for the swaybar, but I eventually got those on too) That particular night I had sat under there with an extra pipe on my wrench to get the bolts as tight as possible. I sped out to the deserted back road and started to slow down from about 50mph and swayed gently back and forth and to my pleasure didn't hear any clunking sounds. As I coasted along I started to steer harder left and right to see if it would clunk. I'm fairly sure I was concentrating way to hard on listening for the sound and far less on driving. So it suprised me when the car started to jolt out of control to the side of the road. I instantly over corrected (inexperienced obviously) out of fear and then tried to slowly correct but by that time it was to late and there was to much torque in the way the car was turning and so I yanked the wheel all the way around to try and spin out and stay on the road instead of flying off into a farm fence and into a ditch (little did I know...). The car spun out as I had wanted but there was more momentum heading off the road than I wanted and the left front wheel dropped off the road and sunk into some mud (it had rained a couple days before) the car instantly stopped and pitched up onto it's nose. I swear I hung there looking down at the road from my seat praying it would flop back onto it's wheels for about 10 seconds but was more like half a second. The car then slowly flopped onto the roof. There wasn't a scratch on the car. I was safe, no airbag went off. The windshield hadn't even cracked. Just to give you an idea of how mediocre the crash was. The car literally was in mint condition laying there on it's hood, sexy ass up in the air. I crawled out shaken and very ashamed. I called 911 and had a tow truck come roll it over. Which was the most painful experience. I actually had to turn away as I watched the tow truck do about a couple grand of damage to my car as it was rolled over. (crunching just about the entire left side of my car in the process, all windows, paint etc.) Initially I thought the car wouldn't be totalled just from how minor the roll was, but it turned out it did sit on the nose for a long time and had completely munched the frame of the car as well as when it had flopped onto the roof, it bent the roof just enough. Those two combined totalled the car. From there I went down to my local subaru dealer and put my name on the 2 year waiting list for the STi. I was the first Although I scrambled for a grand to put down on the car when it was announced and ended up getting bumped to 3rd in line. So that is where I wait now. There is one STi (silver) in town now and I'm waiting to be told when mine will come in. One other lucky bastard should get his before I get mine. Until then, I'll be stone cold pimping in my 1986 300zx with 250k miles on it. |

Man, I remember a year or two ago I was playing on a dirt road in the rain. I was doing the little side to side thing like you were. Sure enough out comes the back, I caught it and it swung back the other way and caught a ditch and in I went. I managed to drive away though. Sucks you didn't, hope you get the STi soon.
