Default Sushi Pier 2... run for your life!

As some of you know, I got pretty sick after eating at Sushi Pier 2 on Oct 29th. Nick and Deede were there, and they both got sick.

Now Deede tells me her roommate's friends ate there, and all 4 of them got sick as well, all in the last 2 weeks.

So, avoid the Sushi Pier, unless you're planning on taking a long walk off it.

And now I can say "Yes, I've had E. Coli"

EDIT: Cipro makes my head feel funny. Either that or I've stayed up too late and need my sleep.

Sashimi is just Sushi w/o the rice... you can not eat sashimi and still eat raw fish.

Hmmm... thats crazy cuz I love sushi peir. I thought they had the best sushi in town - besides the peppermill. Hmm... do you think it was the rice?

And just for you N00BS out there - Sushi is actually the RICE that comes with the fish - not the fish itself. Sushi means viniger rice or something.

It did *taste* good.

It was roughly 24 hours later that it started to be bad

I always thought the litteral translation of "sushi" is "with rice". So it's fish "with rice"... whereas "sashimi" is "without rice", so that's basically sushi w/o the rice.

Does that mean we got sick off of the rice? Because quite frankly the place did smell really fishy that night.

The literal translation is 'Su = vinegar' and 'Shi = rice'. Sushi is technically anything served over vinegary rice. That's what Inari (Tofu) and Tamago (Egg) are still sushi, even though they don't contain fish.

I don't know the etymology of sashimi. I'll see if I can find something on it.

EDIT: also, to clarify. Sushi is *not* the rice that the fish is served on. Sushi is the completed piece; rice + fish. Sushi rice is called sushi meshi.

I doubt the rice is what made you sick. My girlfriend went there with Art a few months ago and was ill for a couple of days.

What? You kinda contridict yourself there.

Anywho... I went on a homestay this weekend and I had a different kind of sushi. It was rice with a bunch of slivers of egg, fish, and other things. It was served in a bowl and you just scooped it out onto your plate. Sorta like mashed potatoes or something.

No I don't. I was saying you are correct that the literal etymology of sushi means vinegar rice, but the real definition means food served over vinegary rice.

Ah... like the literal meaning is vinager rice but the meal is called sushi? Just kind of lost in translation here.

Kinda liek "breakfast" litterally means "to break your fast", but we use it in the language to mean "the 1st meal of the day".

Exactly, except "break fast" would be a verb, and we actually use it as a noun to represent the meal itself, not the act that it litterally translates to.
