Na, the water pump gasket comes with the gasket overhaul kit I have to buy anyway, and the timing belt and water pump is ~$184 shipped. I'd like to help your buddy out, but the price difference is significant enough for me to go with sgp. Sorry

Probably a better chance of my having some free time on the first of those two weekends.

Great, I have the Friday and Monday off, with the option of Tuesday, either to finish it up, or enjoy it I'll let my pops know (he'll be joining us probably, if you don't mind) and order everything. Should I see if Robby will let us use his lift? I'm not sure we'll need it, all the bolts should be on top, except the ones holding the engine to the tranny, but lemme know what you think. Thanks cory

The lift helps, but is not required.

I promised myself I'd quit bumping this thread, but here I go...

I went to kragen and asked about a couple of the parts I'm looking to replace for this cam job, and the timing belt and water pump are significantly cheaper than subarugenuineparts.com, which I can only assume is even cheaper than the dealership. Do youthink they are the same oem parts, or do you think they are knockoff kragen brand or something? Do you think they would be lower quality than getting oem from sgp or the dealership? Thanks

Personally, I'd do OEM over Kragen. This isn't an alternator or a battery, it's an item that will allow the destruction of your motor if it fails. The only other brand I'd get is Gates, but I don't think they're much of a savings. And then you have to ask yourself if you want Gates Racing or just standard...

I wouldn't trust the one main belt to some aftermarket brand probably made in mexico. I have only used OEM timing belts on all of my projects. Alt and power steering I sometimes use aftermarket if I need it right away but even for those belts the cost is usually about the same and you don't have to make several trips to the store because the knucklehead continues to give you a part that says it will fit but does not. Spend the extra $10 or however much it is and sleep better at night
I've also heard good about Gates. The racing version might make a little noise like the STi belt over a wrx belt, I like the noise personally.

I know it's a different app but my brother had a kragen T-belt break on his honda with about 15k mi and a little less than a year old. I checked the tension on it personally and it wasn't too tight or too loose......just a little food for thought.

It's like half the price, but I didn't know if that was mark-up or quality difference. I'll go quality, thanks fellas

I'm with those guys. On parts that won't cause other damage if they fail, it's not so bad to save a buck. But a timing belt- yeah, I'd go OEM (and did, twice).

I work at Kragen, but plan on buying OEM parts when it comes time to do the timing belt. In general, auto parts stores do not carry OEM parts. The quality of aftermarket parts ranges from near OEM all the way down to pure crap. So unless you are familiar with which aftermarket companies actually make quality parts (like Gates belts), I'd stick with OEM for the critical stuff.

Well, thanks to Cory, I am sitting in my car breaking in my brand new cams! And, I don't have shit else to do but set my presets again, so I figured I'd bump this thread again haha. Thanks again Cory, you're the fucking man! I'm sorry I'm so broke, I'll buy you beers and dinners here and there when I can

Pretty good! It's overheating, I think I got some air in the coolant lines, it should work itself out. It happened last time I changed the coolant as well. It's a little quicker, but I was expecting more. Oh well. I'm hoping I'll notice it more when I'm not looking for it

Oh shit, sorry man. Cory even asked if you were coming, and I just said no. I didn't even know you wanted to come... Although I'm sure if I look back in the thread, you said you did... Or maybe ou told me in person. I dunno. Sorry Joel. The good news is, I didn't lose your bit, even tho I couldn't find it for a couple minutes

We talked about it when you were at my house getting the torx bits. Did you end up finding out the difference between torx and torx+?

Cory tried to explain it to me, but I didn't quite follow. The answer is "not much" though. It actually requires a torx+, but the torx 40 is similar enough to work as long as you're careful. Which means I had Cory do it

Oh yeah, Cory also fixed all those idling issues I was having. Turns out, I forgot to reattach a ground while replacing my clutch at Robby's house
And now that I attached it, I have no more issues. Thanks again Cory!

The other great news: the more I drive it, and the more my ecu learns, the more I fall in love with these cams!

It does. Not much of a difference in the exhaust, but enough for me to notice the sound difference. The cams sound sick too
